Seriously? We don't have the access to the soapbox that Ed does. Our hypocrisy doesn't affect this community the way his does.
I think some die-hards seriously signed some oath that they can not question the infallible Vedder and his papacy.
the deletion of the entire "Ed fired his guitar tech?" thread on the PJ forum is a page out of the kim jong il school of media management
regular censoring just leaves behind an uninsightful stepford wives residue
PS
"Oh beth"
I don't think the cold confession/let it ride thread (or whatever you're specifically talking about) was removed or locked or had posts deleted because the mods are kim jong il though- I think (and I could be remembering the wrong thing here, so it's unintentional if so) - I believe the mods were contacted by the ten club folks telling them to cut it out about those songs because they're 'unreleased' and people were asking for copies etc. - basically RM tries to have an at least, cordial rapport with 10 club as they depend on some Pearl Jam related info etc from them and don't look to rock that boat too much.
and the stepford wives reference is fairly unfounded too - no one, not even B or stip is so deadly serious or constricting in their attitudes of what gets posted to require a strict standard of behavior from people posting here. these days it's more common sense - don't ask for unreleased stuff in the public part of the board, don't be so much of a jerk to other people that it causes world war three online, and don't post things that will be overly inflammatory should big brother come snooping around.
so yeah, cute post and all, but terribly unrealistic in my opinion.
ps - even I've made jokes about beth that never got deleted so

Re: Post-Riot Act Moneygrab
Looks like Ten Club is needin' a little fixin' on it.
This wreaks of monetary desperation and honestly may be the first evident sign of the end of this band. If I could had to choose one business to put out of business because of it's inherent non-necessity, it would be the Ten Club.
If you want to chat PJ, come here or go to twitter and use a hashtag. If you "merch" go on Amazon. If you want to post your stickman pictures, go on Instagram or Facebook. Ten Club serves very little purpose other than attempts (despite crashes) to avoid ticketlines. The nonsensically late "merch" is not necessary.
People are growing up to see the scam that it is. The fact that you need to pay to post is hysterical in 2013.

Even if PJ breaks up they will probably keep 10C around. And it wont even mention the band, it will just be a weird fanclub for itself.

As laughably inaccurate as the video is (especially the smiles and friendly waves from the 10C staff), it is just a promo video. I think the PJ marketing squad has realized videos are an effective way to get a point across, who wants to bother reading these days?

I actually agree with this, and that's kinda my point. I think this might be a sign, the band's on it's way out. I seriously think the Ten Club would stay around if that was the case - they employee a decent amount of slackers. If it was true, the slackers probably understand they need to lock people in to the contract now. That way, they get the loot now before people realize the band's done and there's absolutely no arguable purpose for their organization's existence.
It's a marketing rope-a-dope with merch (said in horrible guy from video accent) as the bait.

Re: Post-Riot Act Moneygrab
I don't have the time or inclincation to read all of the posts in this thread, but my 2 cents:
I would have never bothered with Pearl Jam if they were "just" an uncompromising, artsy rock band. I would have just latched my wagon way back when to bands like Sonic Youth and Pavement and Fugazi. But I didn't, I wanted something that moved uncomfortably within it's station of the rock hiearchy. Whether they do it successfully or not, I want them to atleast try to challenge the mainstream and play to the edges of commerce. I believe this is a band best heard in arenas. That is where their strengths are. If they go down the path of doing layered, genre-bending, headphone masterpieces they pale in comparison to the greats in this department - Pink Floyd, David Bowie, David Byrne, Radiohead, Trent Reznor, etc, etc. Their true contemporaries are of the Great American rock tradition (CCR, Ramones, Van Halen, Petty, Springsteen). I prefer them as they are: a guitar-based band that is steeped in classic rock and punk with a modern take, accessible chorusus, and neat little twists and turns with folk and pych flavors but not to the point of wankery or playing beyong their skill. A "dumb" rock people's band for smart people with a social conscious and one that is marketed accordingly so that it is inviting to old and new fans alike.

Problem is - they had an opportunity to be "that" and they chose, quite publicly I might add, to turn it down relatively early on in their career. Instead, they chose to try to be a defiant blending of the paths you presented (Sonic Youth in word, Pink Floyd in obscurity, CCR in anthemic qualities, the Dead in live foundation). Then, eventually (a few years ago), they wanted to re-choose and jump on (the Springsteen path) due to monetary purposes. That's what we're seeing. And it's been a shit show.

That video is stupid. But I'd like to hear the instrumental version of "Given to Fly" that they used for it.IlluminEddie wrote:

Re: Post-Riot Act Moneygrab
I agree with the fact it's on the Springsteen path. I think this is a band that follows thec examples of those they idolize. They rarely try something that their elders haven't already. The Vitalogy through Riot Act period was really inspired most by Neil Young's middle period. Now, they are on the Springsteen late era path. Playing to large audiences but not pandering to One Direction fans either (yeah I know EdVed posed in a pic with them, so what?). Aerosmith playing with NSync is a moneygrab, Kiss getting a rollercoaster is a moneygrab. The 90s are dead, dudes. I think they know it, and they are pretty comfortable in their skin about all of this.IlluminEddie wrote:Tuolumne wrote:I don't have the time or inclincation to read all of the posts in this thread, but my 2 cents:

They could do much worse than emulate Springsteen. True, it is what they are doing, but I'm totally okay with it.

Does anyone know when they first played a Springsteen song or even acknowledged him in any way?
I feel, although perhaps I'm wrong, it wasn't until very late in their career (like Vote for Change time). In my opinion, Pearl Jam understands their market is sizable in Philly/NJ /NYarea... particularly in blue collar areas. The rest of the northeast is fairly decent, as is Northwest. Everywhere else, not so much. I think they understood, Springsteen made a career out of appealing to exactly where PJ's majority market lies (Northeast, particularly Philly/NJ/NY) and branching out from there. They, therefore, decided to emulate him. Which, if true, is ridiculously sad and echoes the thoughts of money grab.
But, perhaps, Ed and company were always Bruce fans even back when Ten was recorded. I think we would've heard that though.
Also, Bruce sucks.... he's terrible.
