I can't explain, let alone defend, Thornton. He obviously crossed the line, but I have to imagine things would have played out differently if the refs had called the penguins on their dirty plays earlier and orpik had done the proper thing and dropped the gloves.numbers wrote:It almost sounds like someone doesn't like the bruins.

That's pretty rich given you always make excuses for Lucic by saying he doesn't need to fight the other team's goon because he's too valuable.elliseamos wrote:I can't explain, let alone defend, Thornton. Re: NHL Thread
1. Orpik shouldn't need to drop the gloves, at worst it was a 2 min penalty for interference...this whole "you gotta drop the gloves for any kind of hit" is crap
2. Completely out of character for Thornton, but it's still inexcusable...
3. James Neal is a pretty dirty player, he knew exactly what he was doing
4. 7 for Thornton, 5 for Neal, nothing for Orpik

I'd kinda say that's exactly what it was...that doesn't excuse it but that's pretty much what it wasphilpritchard wrote:Oh yeah, the Bruins and their toughness. But yeah, let's talk about the vaunted Bruins toughness.
This isn't an error in judgment or a miscalculation or a heat of the moment mistake. This is Shawn Thornton being a gutless piece of shit.

i hate boston's announcers, but the guy was right. if orpik "manned up" and fought thornton this wouldnt have happened.
who was dirtier here, thornton or james neal?

I don't see it that way because it played out so slowly. It's not like Thornton just dropped him with a punch. He skated over fairly slowly and took him down, then dropped down and punched him. He had plenty of time to not be an idiot. This strikes me as Domi on Neidermayer level stupid.MattA75 wrote:I'd kinda say that's exactly what it was...that doesn't excuse it but that's pretty much what it wasphilpritchard wrote:Oh yeah, the Bruins and their toughness. I don't mind the Bruins at all. I don't like Thornton, but I don't mind the team. I just think the whole idea that Orpik is to blame for not fighting Thornton is crap, especially when it's combined with the "Bruins players would have stood up for themselves!" mentality, as if Brad Marchand is the kind of player to defend himself after a dirty hit.numbers wrote:It almost sounds like someone doesn't like the bruins.
It's the same holier than thou attitude we see with diving.

You might be confusing the point of these two different situations.shinkdew wrote:That's pretty rich given you always make excuses for Lucic by saying he doesn't need to fight the other team's goon because he's too valuable.elliseamos wrote:I can't explain, let alone defend, Thornton. Door 1: a goon goes to lucic and challenges him, in an effort to get his own team pumped up and to hopefully take Boston's top scorer off the ice.
Door 2: lucic does something, like lay a big hit on somebody, the other team then challenges lucic to fight. To which he complies.

I'd be happy with 4 or 5 for Neal. It was just so senseless.Peeps wrote:shinkdew wrote:Neal will be with him. I reiterate that Neal is one of the dirtiest players in the league. Two of the dirtiest plays I've seen in a while in a 30 second span.Simple Torture wrote:Have a nice vacation, Thornton!
I will say this Neal should get 2 games just cause it was a hit to the head but it didn't look like he stuck his knee out. Thornton 5-10?
what a comeback by the bruins...though id say it was 49% them and 51% stupid plays be the pens
I'm a big Bruins fan but Thornton should get at least 10 games. More if he counts as a repeat offender. Thornton did something stupid that had an outcome he never foresaw but that he is wholly responsible for. Not that it matters to either the on ice act or the suspension coming, but he did sound truly contrite for the outcome and did not try to duck his responsibility in any way.
Think I’m going to try being kind to everyone a chance.

Agreed on the length of suspensions. I feelse like Neal will only get 2-3 because Marchand wasn't hurt, but it should be more.surfndestroy wrote:I'd be happy with 4 or 5 for Neal. It was just so senseless.

TSN boards....
i agree neal should be suspended (im guessing around 5) and yes what duper did was stupid but that seems to be all that is being pointed out. lets not talk about the crosscheck to connor or charas butt end of kunitz...
it all boils down to orpik (they claim he is the pens enforcer) not fighting thorton and neal being dirty. they also claimed the bruins lost three guys, 1 for a broken leg (dupis responsible) and eriksson and marchand.
never mind marchand was back in a shift or two or that orpiks hit was clean.
crosby got lit up by giroux almost the same way...yet everyone cheers cause they hate crosby...but orpik does it and its a crime cause orpik plays for the pens
