I'm in such a huge Pearl Jam phase right now it feels more like 1993 than 2013. With that new album smell still fresh, I've been getting those chills that I used to get in the 90's. In actual fact this time of year often brings me back to that Vitalogy release in 1994. New Pearl Jam at Christmas is a beautiful thing and right now I'm in that zone.

Despite my yuletide associations, my excitement truly stems from the quality of Lightning Bolt. I find it's just the right mix of hard rock, atmospheric experimentation and emotive ballad-types that we've come to love. I should point out that I've been on-board since 1991 and my early attraction to the band was songs like Once, Even Flow, RVM, Porch, etc. I was in it for the big fist-pumping anthems, and much less-so the haunting Releases or the acoustic Small Towns. My tastes must have matured along with the band's, because some of my favourites on LB are Sirens, Yellow Moon and Future Days. I suppose I've chilled out as I hit my mid-30's, but I've also appreciated the way that Eddie is moving toward the Springsteen-model of well constructed song-writing that is befitting of his voice. Given their longevity, I might have been happy to just get any new music at this point, even another slog-fest collection like Riot Act. Instead I find myself going back to this album consistently and really enjoying what they've put together.

Pearl Jam are the greatest American rock band of the last two decades and with this album I'm thrilled that they have retaken their rightful place on the throne. I've fallen in love with this band all over again and it's a fantastic time to be a PJ fan.

Was listening to someone's "wishlist" on PJradio this morning (some solid picks from Melissa in Nevada!) and there was an absolutely fantastic version of Sleight of Hand from Katowice 6/16/2000. I completely forgot about how good those two shows were. The story goes that the tickets didn't sell well, and there were only 3,000 people but how great that this band made the attempt to get there and ended up putting on a very unique performance. These are the kind of special shows/moments that have added so much to the band's folklore.

That setlist was Binaural-heavy, with 30 songs played, including a lot of the fan-boy ones that we all love: hail Hail, I Got shit, In Hiding, Smile, Immortality.

After having sold out the eight-thousand-capacity venue the night before, Pearl Jam returns the following evening to find it barely a third full. As such, the band immediately deviates from the printed set list, opening with four slow songs in a row ("Release", "Of The Girl", "Sleight Of Hand", "Thin Air"). From there, the quintet makes things up as it goes along, trotting out tour rarities like "In Hiding", "Dissident", "I Got Id" and "Smile", in what turns out to be one of its most unusual shows in years.

Jeff Ament: We came out with a set list and the set list was definitely a lot different than anything we'd done on the tour. Pretty much right at the beginning, we just said, "Let's relax and do whatever comes to mind". That was a musical highlight for me live, just taking all the pressure off of being an entertainer and just going up and playing songs like you're in your living room.

Matt Cameron: Eddie just decided to call songs out. There was no set list or anything. It was kind of like playing a kegger.

I just listened to this for the first time. I was really afraid that it was going to be ed H'ing the song to death like he does to everything these days. Now this performance kind of sucks, but that seems mostly to be Mike's fault (though Ed is singing too fast at first). My point is, Ed is actually singing something straight here. He isn't stretching syllables or adding Hs, he's just fucking singing the song. Why can't he do this all the time?
