And this dude finishing everything off:

We might disagree on a song by song basis (the worst contribution to Lightning Bolt is LTRP, by far) but your general point here is a good one.RemusLillian wrote:Been chuckling along to RM for a few years now, but never felt a more appropriate time to post than this thread.
Whether or not Ed is trying to emulate Bruce, he is for sure the downfall of PJ as we once knew them. As soon as he assumed creative control it pretty much gradually started going to shit. This was notched up a rank or twelve around the riot act period when the rest of the band, especially Stone, seemed to totally cede all musical control to him.
The biggest problem with the last few albums is how many shit Ed songs there are on them. Lets take LBC-Unthought Known-Lightning Bolt for a start, they are essentially the same fucking song. And that song is shit. Gone was pretty much an updated Betterman musically. And what the fuck happened to Gossard? One contribution to LB? I would have happily taken anything off of Moonlander over some of Ed's generic power chord wank fests. Look, I'm not trying to say that Let The Records Play is a great song, far from it, but at least there is something remotely different going on to PJ as we are accustomed to. And for fucks sake, how many surfing metaphors can there be?
Live, Ed and his awful, awful guitar tone has ruined pretty much every gig since Riot Act. And thats assuming he stays sober enough to play in time with everyone else. To go back to the Bruce comparison, the man is 63 and plays 3-4 hours a night, tirelessly working a crowd until he's on his knees, whether or not you are a fan you can't deny him that. Ed will show up for his gigs in AUS next year, bumble his way through a stagnant setlist he's been playing for 6 years, constantly forgetting lyrics, aborting and restarting songs, completely underrehearsed, probably drunk, and charge you $160 for the pleasure. If the plan is to market him as a blue collar hero, then they'll run into problems, because, frankly, he's an asshole.
Oh, and don't forget your $30 Seattle Surf Co. Dog Bowl (Only $60 Shipping) on the way out the door.

Not the best example admittedly, but I had warmed to my theme, and before you know it the post had been made.harmless wrote:We might disagree on a song by song basis (the worst contribution to Lightning Bolt is LTRP, by far) but your general point here is a good one.RemusLillian wrote:Been chuckling along to RM for a few years now, but never felt a more appropriate time to post than this thread.

i think Ed had a lot more passion and depth to be expressed at that time, and that was part of a natural push to takeover by him during that albumstip wrote:now that you're 8 posts in, didn't Eddie largely take control of the band during Vitalogy?

Also Lightning Bolt is an excellent song!
I a mine is the basically the same life affirming message (and the chorus is we, not I) that had appeared in about 30 songs prior.96583UP wrote:i think Ed had a lot more passion and depth to be expressed at that time, and that was part of a natural push to takeover by him during that albumstip wrote:now that you're 8 posts in, didn't Eddie largely take control of the band during Vitalogy?
but each successive album he got a bit more depleted and by Riot Act the plunge began... pussing along to "I am Mine"; which might as well be translated "I am Done" (with all of the stuff that made me a deep/artistic/selfless person and now I am affirming that I am just going to live for me) and then that just gives way champagne breakfast with BOB and Bruce and shitting from helicopters with sean penn onto people's houses

One of the guys during one of the interviews related the fact that if Ed brings in a song, it's essentially fully formed and ready to go. Maybe Ed has developed a problem writing to music not written by himself?RemusLillian wrote:The biggest problem with the last few albums is how many shit Ed songs there are on them. This brings me to something I've been thinking about, does Pearl Jam need a new drummer? Matt is a fantastic drummer but he's not Matt Cameron when he plays in the studio with Pearl Jam anymore. He's a neutered ghost of himself. He's no longer Matt Cameron, drummer for Pearl Jam. He's become this nondiscript, non-entity who drums for Pearl Jam. They tried to do it with Dave A. but he didn't conform, so they fired him. They brought in Jack, who was what they wanted but still allowed Jack to be Jack. Then along comes Matt and he gets a little less Matt and more blah on each successive album. Bringing in a new drummer would hopefully give the drums the needed presence in songs and add a bit of swagger back to the music. Or let Matt be Matt.nomorecrackpipes wrote:One of the guys during one of the interviews related the fact that if Ed brings in a song, it's essentially fully formed and ready to go.
