Everyone's trying to pull off the Marvel Studios thing now.

Can't really blame them, either. I just wish sometimes they understood how to do what the other guy is doing.

This for sure. Though in DC's case I'm not sure they can wait. Marvel has a huge head start and both companies have similar if not out right copies of characters. Thanos makes Darkseid redundant. I don't think it's an accident Marvel is doing Ultron next since it waters down Brainiac. DC is trying to get an Occult based team off the ground in the form of Justice League Dark. How much you wanna bet Marvel gets Dr Strange out first? DC has to get going or else the general movie going public who has no idea which character came first or rightly cares will think DC movies are rip-offs might decide to skip them. Luckily DC has Batman. Everyone loves Batman.

Absolutely. DC's in its own kinda pickle. This is interesting because it's a Marvel property that's been displaced. It's kind alike when Windows released the Zune.

Against all odds, this managed to not be a horrible clusterfuck.

There's a lot of over-the-top cartoonishness in it, especially in regards to the villains and their motivations, but I'm okay with it. Like the first film, it shines during the smaller character moments, especially the interactions with Gwen and Aunt May. The action scenes are also particularly lush when compared to other recent superhero movies.

Speaking of,
Spoiler: show
I think they handled Gwen's death really well. If you're at all familiar with the comics, you know it's coming, and I was kinda dreading it. But it was a beautiful sequence, even if the preceding confrontation was kind of preposterous.
It's loaded with superhero screenplay cliches, weird narrative structure and bad-guy fatigue. Some of the subplots are kind of pointless. But I liked it. A lot of very nice moments scattered throughout, and the end carries a lot of emotional resonance. My little brother's gonna love it.

Is it better than the first one? I finally got around to watching that a couple of weeks back and what a clusterfuck of a film that was...

I didn't think the first one was bad at all. If you hated that one, you'll hate this one even more.

I enjoyed the first one. The villain wasn't compelling but Andrew Garfield is a really good Spider-Man

I really hated his take on Spiderman. I don't think that first one holds a candle to the first two with Toby Maguire

I think that's kinda what I liked about the first series - Toby came across as this reluctant hero, not some arrogant prick
