For the record, I'm not suggesting Neil should actually be suspended because that would be ridiculous. I'm saying in comparison to what Cooke did, which was pretty obviously accidental, Neil's actions were far more malicious.

I would suggest that if not for the utterly stupid instigator rule, more people would do what Neil did, which would cut down on dirty play across the league (regardless of the fact that at worst the play is questionable and Cooke was a victim of his own reputation in this circumstance)

Happy Hockey Day in America. I just want to apologize in advance to everyone for being subjected to a Sabres game this afternoon.

I'd rather watch a WNBA game.

Well, so long to Lindy Ruff. Hard to believe he made it as long as he did. I don't know if I ever seen a team play such long stretches seeming totally disinterested.

I am sort of shocked. Lindy Ruff deserved to be fired. He was hired in 1997 and that is an eternity in pro sports. Lindy lead the Sabres to 4 conference championships a President's Trophy, and a Stanley Cup appearance. I am convinced the Sabres would have won the Cup in 2006 if it wasn't for injuries to the top 4 defenseman heading into game 7 of the ECF.

It isn't Ruff's fault that the organization was torn apart by a billionaire who didn't care about hockey and wasn't willing to step up and keep Drury and Briere on July 1, 2007.

The ball is in our new billionaire's court. It looks like the Sabres will promote Ron Rolston to be the coach. I just wonder if that will be to finish the season or if they are going to turn the team over to him long term.

Rolston is officially the Sabres interim coach through the regular season. They still feel like a 10th place team to me. I would like to see them finish that way and to see the GM replaced. I don't want to see Darcy make this coaching change long term.

As part of this big day for the Sabres organization, the team waived Cody McCormick and called up Kevin Porter from Rochester. Porter will be the 7th Sabres player to be a Hobey Baker winner and if Leopold plays tomorrow 3 former Hobey winners will be on the ice.

Some info I dug up.

The Hobey Baker award has been given out 31 times and the following players have played for the Sabres

Tom Kurvers (Minn-Del)
Rob Stauber (Minnesota)
Brian Holzinger (Bowling Green)
Chris Drury (BU)
Ryan Miller (Michigan St)
Jordan Leopold (Minnesota)
Kevin Porter (Michigan)

That is 7 of 31.

Top 5 HB winners of All-Time

1. Paul Kariya
2. Chris Drury
3. Neil Broten
4. Ryan Miller
5. Brenden Morrison

Kariya will be the first HB winner to land in the Hockey Hall of Fame. I doubt Drury will make it but he is close. If he would have won a Gold Medal a few years ago I would have argues harder for him.

I would like to see Kariya in... he was one of the best players of his generation and put up 400 goals and just under 1000 points while playing primarily in the dead-puck era and missing huge chunks of his prime with injuries.

I can't see any way that Drury is even remotely close to a Hall of Famer.

Also, please don't mention Tom Kurvers ever again.

The case for Drury is made because it is a Hockey Hall of Fame and not just the NHL Hall of Fame. I admit his overall case isn't worthy of the hall of fame. He wont be inducted and doesn't deserve to be. I guess he was close relative to other Hobey Baker winners.

Kariya screams hall of fame to me. If he doesn't get it, he got screwed.

The Pens vs Flyers game was awesome tonight. Is it possible the Penguins play the most exciting games in the NHL? They have gotten awesome games out of Philadelphia and Buffalo in 5 days. That is pretty impressive.

One thing that the shortened season is amplifying is how bad the back up goaltending is in the league. The Pens lost at least a point because their back up let in a softie at the end.
