RETIRED - The all inclusive video game thread

I know it isn't the first person shooter game that most people around here play, but we are getting Super Mario 3D World tonight. My wife is out of town for the weekend so the stepson and I are going out to a Japanese steakhouse and then probably pulling an all nighter playing the game. It looks like a great Mario game and is getting good reviews.

My 7 year old is getting a Wii U for Christmas and we got him this game too let us know how it goes! Hoping it's not too tough!

I'm afraid of using light armor at first, because even in my first fight with three wolves they got a few bites in. Do you use any melee weapons? Daggers or one-handed swords or anything like that?

Oh, and just to nip this in the bud:

One-handed swords always. Here's a tip: kill a lot of animals and turn the pelts into leather. Make a ton of leather bracers, sell them and buy up all leather and leather strips around town and repeat the process ever so often. You'll max out smithing in no time.

At first I tried a ranger/archer type dude, but it was taking forever. Then I made a fighter guy with a two handed weapon skill and heavy armor and just breezed through the game. you can just run through the dungeons without worrying about anyone.

I felt so nerdy typing that.

I should look into getting a stepson to game with

It is pretty fun playing with him. He's better at everything except Mario kart.

It's tough if you are going for 100 percent of all the items. We are. But just for general play it isn't that bad.

My 3ds library is growing quickly. I can't get over what a deep catalog of great games the system has.
So far I have A Link Between Worlds. Scribblenauts Unmasked, Animal Crossing New Leaf, Monster Hunter 3, Zero Escape, Shin Megami Tensei IV, Luigi's Mansion, and Fire Emblem Last Awakening.

I also pre-ordered Bravely Default, which is an amazing looking rpg from square-enix. It looks like an old school FF game and is receiving quite a bit of praise. I like that the CE comes with 34 or so AR cards that you can use throughout the game for cutscenes. I've been waiting for a game to take advantage of those.

Anyone here playing any of these games?

Fire Emblem was the reason I bought a 3ds. I played that a lot til I beat it, then moved in to pokemon. Animal crossing has been nearly an everyday ritual for me. I caught every bug, found every fossil and should be finished with my encyclopedia by June. Screw completing the entire catalogue; I had 25% awhile ago and have no idea how close I even am to 50%

I'm getting a 3ds for christmas and will at least buy half of the games you listed at some point. A Link Betweeen Worlds and Bravely Default are the ones I'm especially excited for.

Fire Emblem is so so good, but I'm holding off getting much further (I'm around chapter 7) until I beat Zelda and Luigi's Mansion. I want to fully focus on it. I also got a good 14 hours into Zero Escape which you guys should REALLY look into if you never heard of it. It's unlike any other game on the system. The first in the series is called 999 on DS. Great series.

Anyways I got 14 hours into Zero Escape, turned my game on one day and it just froze my 3DS every time it would try to load. I figured I just corrupted my game save and would start over, but I read that this is a known issue. So basically if you're going to play Zero Escape they almost recommend that you ONLY play that game and put your system to sleep instead of saving it or only save during specific parts of the game. It's a 40 hour game that's meant for multiple playthroughs and it glitches more often than not. Huge bummer, but the game is too good to not play.

What's your opinion of Pokemon? I've never played one but am really tempted to get one of these new ones since the online sounds great. It has voice chat (yayyy I get to chat with 6 yr olds....), but also lots of really interesting online features. Is it worth giving a bash?

I played The original pokemon games, so I would be biased in telling you that the game is fun. Right now I am using a second cartridge to play a variation of a hard mode/nuzlocke run. Essentially what nuzlocke is http://www.nuzlocke.com/challenge.php . The variation I am using utilizes the wonder trade option, so every pokemon I get I wonder trade away to get a random pokemon in return. This is my third attempt at finishing the game because I got too impatient with leveling after losing a few guys. The hardest part is actually putting the pokemon in the cemetery because you get attached to certain guys and use ones you'd never normally use. The worst part is people tend to send a lot of junk out on wonder trade or for example give them dumb names like an espurr I received that someone named Pube.

I'm sorely lacking in imagination, so i did my first playthrough of Skyrim as a Nord with heavy armor and most of my skills based around 1 handed sword/archery. Minimal magic use but i smithed the fuck outta everything and got Daedric armor about midway through the game.

I started playing Far Cry 3 this weekend. Initially i didn't find it all that interesting, kind of like an open world Uncharted with a thin storyline but the more i play the more i'm getting into it. i love stealthing my way into an enemy camp and taking them out one by one. disturbingly satisfying.

OK, Super Mario 3D world is fantastic. Especially the later levels.

Except these guys. They suck.
