Really, no reason at all?
This would have been good if not for the timing of the date/time stamp.

Regardless of the outcome, I think you have to find out if and how much you're going to pay Cutler at the end of the year. You don't find that out if he's on the bench.

You think they played Cutler this past weekend to find out how much they need to pay him next year? Really?

I think they played him because they have no idea if he's the answer as much as they want him to be.

Also, the Bears can't give McCown more than the minimum next year so he's as good as gone.

I'm sure someone's going to point out how wrong I am, because I really don't know what I'm talking about, but I think we should franchise Cutler to buy another year, resign McCown to a decent 1 or 2 year deal, and draft nothing but defensive guys.

Unless we make the playoffs, he D gets hot, and we go deep. If Cutler pulls an Eli it's a different story.

Why can't McCown get a raise from the Bears?

Financially it's a bad move to franchise the QB this season (typically its bad to franchise a QB). Cutler would get somewhere between $16-18M, but the salary cap implications would be what really matters and would hamper their ability to resign players or get new FAs. When a player signs a multiyear deal, their salary cap hit can be spread out over the contract, whereas the Franchise tag would be very large for a single year.

He can, but they can't do it before free agency opens where he'll likely be given more years and money by other teams.

IF you admit he can get a raise, why did you say the bears can't give more than the minimum?

The Bears can negotiate with McCown, they just can't sign him until FA begins.

Honestly I think McCown will stay, accept a decent raise to stay in a good situation with Trestman, his offensive system and Offensive firepower of the Bears. He prob won't get close to that in another situation. Unless another team offers him an enormous contract, but I'm sure that previous list will be factored into other GM's thought processes.

Same situation with Cutler. With all that he's been saying, sounds like Cutler will stay for less to be in this good situation.

Yeah I think so. I think he wants the SB and probably doesn't want to change OCs again - nor leave the talent in Chicago (where he is the undisputed starter).

There's a lot to be excited about. We have a big boy offense that makes me touch myself in odd places.
