I'd have signed Beltran for 3/45 in a heartbeat.

I'd say that's it for roster moves, unless they can trade one of their $tarter$

As I've been tracking, if the Sox were looking to be at or below $189M for next year's payroll, they're at $175M spent at this point. I have to believe they're done with the big moves to allow themselves the option of taking on money during the season. I'd also think that the team will be dumping or re-negotiating with one of: Lackey, Peavy, or Dempster, to further open the door to trades at the deadline.

SP: Lester (l), Lackey (r), Buchholz (r), Doubront (l), Peavy (r)
BP: Uehara (r), Breslow (l), Tazawa (r)(arb), Mujica (r), Badenhop (r)(arb), Miller (l)(arb), Dempster (r, long)

line-up/order:
RF: Victorino (s)
2B: Pedroia (r)
DH: Ortiz (l)
1B: Napoli (r)
LF: Nava (s)
C: Pierzynski (l)
3B: Middlebrooks (r)
CF: Jackie Bradley Jr. (l)
SS: Bogaerts (r)

Bench: Carp (l)(arb), Ross (r), Gomes (r), Herrera (s)(arb)

Total Spent this offseason: $37.5M
Spoiler: show
Pierzynski - $8.25M, love the one you're with
Mujica - $4.75, no free passes makes him seem like a uehara "stat" comparable.
Napoli - $16, sets the line-up, both defensively and offensively

estimated (made-up by me giving them a raise on their salary from this year) arbitration numbers:
Tazawa - $3M
Miller - $2.5M
Badenhop - $2M
Carp - $1M
Herrera - $1M

Me and Cherington, we think alike.

edit: I really hope he follows my advice on Drew as well.

I'd still like to see them bring Drew back; just not comfortable with Middlebrooks at third and Bogaerts at SS as starters heading into the season.

I'd start Drew at SS and then have Bogaerts play third to begin the season unless Middlebrooks finds his swing again in Spring Training.

I'd rather go with Middlebrooks and Bogaerts and have the payroll flexibility to do something bigger if they need to come July than deal with an overpaid Stephen Drew for multiple years

I want Bogaerts to play SS next year. How many years has this team been looking for a great young shortstop? They finally have one, and they want to move him to 3B? I'm not ready to give up on Middlebrooks yet either, he still has great upside.

I don't know much about the guy they got, is he a major league player or more of a Brock holt type? If it's the latter I don't think it changes anything with drew.

Hey Sox fans! Oldman ellis added Peavy's contract twice in the excel sheet and therefore, the Sox have something like $14M to work with before they exceed the $189M luxury tax threshold.

ellis working through the roster on a spreadsheet, while readily available in about 900.000 places on the internet and in print media, is hilarious.

i knew of no other place than cots for "2014 obligations" and then went through mlbtraderumors for arb. estimates. i don't know of these other 898,000 places for said info, but i'm happy to know of them.

yes i did, numbers.

also, clearly this dough is burning a hole in their pocket:
The Red Sox want Stephen Drew back and hope to still re-sign him, manager John Farrell said during a radio appearance on WEEI's Hot Stove Show (partial transcript from WEEI.com's Alex Speier). Boston's recent trade for Jonathan Herrera adds needed experience to their young left side of the infield, but Farrell said that there's mutual interest between Drew and the Sox in a reunion.

I think it's safe to say that Drew has no other options other than the Red Sox, if he did, he would've already signed somewhere else. He's going to end up signing for less than the $14m qualifying offer. Boras screwed him just like he did Varitek in 2008.

Yeah, not as bad as he fucked up Choo though(thus far, at least.) I dont have an issue with Drew, he's a solid player, I just want Bogaerts playing short next year.
