Frances Ha was amazing.
Watched Russian Ark again and basically had a religious experience. Love that movie so much.

Prince Avalanche (now on Netflix Instant). I thought it was really good. Very compelling, very beautiful, worth a watch.

prince avalanche was terrible. basically a film that is mediocre in every way and then imitates high art sporadically. I wanted to like it. was looking forward to one of those classic coming of age type films. and the setting was great

Re: What movies are you watching?
I disagree that it "imitates high art sporadically." I think it's an artful film made with an eye toward watchability and inclusivity of a slightly wider audience than a Herzog film would have (I use Herzog as an example only bc I can imagine him making a similar film). The movie still takes the time to appreciate the beauty of this work and this place. It gives Rudd and Hirsch the space to become real characters, and I think that they are both very successful. The movie might be a little confused about itself, and I think the ending reveals that, but I found it to be very compelling.Dev wrote:prince avalanche was terrible. basically a film that is mediocre in every way and then imitates high art sporadically. Re: What movies are you watching?
American Hustle. not great. Some great performances (not by Christian Bale), but overall seemed like style over substance. Actually it didn't have a lot of style either. Imitates Goodfellas or Casino, but isn't nearly as good.
I give it a C.

I assumed it would have characteristics of Goodfella & Casino, but what's the beef with Bale about? I'm seeing it tomorrow.

Re: What movies are you watching?
It's hard to buy him as a fat schlub. he just looks like Christian Bale ate a lot of cheeseburgers and picked up a Brooklyn accent. Maybe it's just me, but he seems miscast.Harry Lime wrote:BurtReynolds wrote:American Hustle. not great. Some great performances (not by Christian Bale), but overall seemed like style over substance. Watched "Prisoners" last night, B+, it was predictable but still suspenseful.
