There are folks other than you who have deep, long-rooted opinions, you know. The "other side" is not really as simplistic as you like to think.

I'm not reading all that. you lost me after the first statement in the previous reply where you somehow still avoid recognizing the desire for commercial success was their primary concern. i recognize you are referring to me, but i just dont care.

Thanks for refreshing my memory.

So, has desire for commercial success been the primary concern over the last ten years? Yes? No?

That's the question.

The question is not how people who don't like ten years of PJ music are "coping"

Given how you define commercial success, no. I think the moneygrab stuff is stupid, and at times borders on tin hat conspiracy theorizing. And when it doesn't it often comes across as petty.

In terms of what matters/influences:

Concerned about expanding the penetration of their music: Yes

Concerned about making as much money as possible to the detriment of other concerns: No

Concerned about making the best records they can: Yes

Concerned about writing songs that will fit well into the live shows: yes

I think these concerns have led to a return to writing songs that are more immediate and less insular: yes (which has been the approach used on Ten, Vs, Yield, S/T, Backspacer, and Lightning Bolt--nothing new here--it's a different style of writing that has defined more than half their studio career)

Which is the most important I couldn't tell you. I suspect it is

I agree with KD and others that there is less time spent on ALL of these concerns than there has been in the past (due to family or complacency, or other commitments--we can speculate how much of an impact each has), which means the music is probably not as good as it could be, regardless of how good you think it is. It also raises the stakes when we do get new music.

If the music has suffered (I think it's gotten better than where it was, but certainly not as good as the peak) it is due to this lack of time spent working on it or running out of ideas after 20+ years.

With Occam's Razor in mind, let's all realize the above statement is probably closest to being right. It would be better than the alternative: theorizing endlessly about things we don't really know the answer to in order to satiate our misplaced anger at Eddie Vedder and the Pearl Jams.

Pj will never have money grab as a motivation. Ten through Vitalogy alone will see them and their kids right, individually, for long after we're gone.

not talking about pearl jam here, but rich people do stuff for the money all the time. having money doesn't stop people from trying to get more of it. it doesn't make much sense to me either, but people are greedy idiots.

This may be hard for you to believe, considering how you've pigeonholed all of the "moneygrab" opinions into one simplified category, but I actually agree with most of what you've written here. There are only two clarifications required-
stip wrote: Concerned about expanding the penetration of their music: Yes
Help me understand how this is not a desire for commercial success? I understand that you think it's not their primary concern (and we disagree on that), but you're just playing with words here.

Does this imply that you believe the songs on S/T, Backspacer, and LB are equally "immediate and less insular" as the songs on Ten, Vs, & Yield? That's a little difficult to understand.

Didn't know there was such a thing!

I have found it!

I feel all warm and fuzzy inside now

Does it make me any less of a man considering how small my santa hat is?
