Re: Musical Guilty Pleasures.
In the mid to late 90s, I liked some of the derivative bands that came out like Bush, Sponge, Collective Soul, and even Crash Test Dummies...but I haven't even thought about listening to any of that in many many years. I have, however, enjoyed KISS, and feel compelled to listen to them once every 8-10 years for about 20 minutes. Same goes for Motley Crue, Guns N Roses, Michael Jackson (Thriller was my favorite album as a 5 year old and I still enjoy it to this day)...
2 bands I despise that I feel like I am supposed to despise: Journey and Bon Jovi (I told my wife I would cancel the wedding if they played Bon Jovi...I really hate Bon Jovi. I really hate that people like to sing Living on a Prayer in bars, and might have been the last straw for me giving up the bar scene.)
Most modernly, I think every fun. tune I've heard is catchy, and their dramatic delivery reminds me a lot of Queen, but they get far too much hype.
If this can be considered guilty, I have a Black Keys can do no wrong policy. They are flatly my Pearl Jam of the 00's and 10's.

Didn't we all agree that guilty pleasures are stupid? Either you like something or you don't. Save the guilt for that thing you did to that one guy that night when you were drunk.

I do agree, though it still doesn't stop me from feeling a moderate amount of guilt for enjoying it nonetheless. I also rationally believe that Valentine's Day is a massively dumb holiday, yet I still always do some sort of gesture for my wife every year even though we both feel the same way about it.turned2black wrote:Didn't we all agree that guilty pleasures are stupid? I really like the Taylor Swift "Trouble" song. Not as high school girly as some of the other songs of hers I've heard. Reminds me of second album Avril Lavigne, which i also really liked.

Sonic Youth covered Madonna, albeit ironically, I think. That's makes Madonna not guilty.

Pearl Jam tagged Ray of Light onto Daughter in 1998. And it was awesome.

Madonna is great (or use to be). Like a Prayer is a spectacular album.

Re: Musical Guilty Pleasures.
I generally agree with the notion that 'guilty pleasures' is a silly term and one should be unapologetic and sincere about one's tastes without wanting to make a bunch of excuses for it,
BUT,
when I think of my "musical guilty pleasures" I think of cheesy, sugary pop songs that I have such a visceral reaction to that I'd be a little embarrassed to be seen listening to them by my friends and family. I wish I had the strength of character to say no, these are my jams, and I don't give a fuck what you think-- but, if I'm honest with myself, there are some songs I'd simply rather listen to in private.
These include:
"Sugar Baby Love" by the Rubettes
"The Promise" by When In Rome
"Like an Angel Passing Through My Room" by ABBA.
"Headlights on the Parade" by The Blue Nile
"This Woman's Work" by Kate Bush (IT MAKES ME WEEPY)
"Forever Young" by Alphaville (ugh.)
"Hitsville UK" by The Clash (sometimes.)

Kate Bush is a fucking genius and thanks to her we have the likes of Bjork and Natasha Khan. I would never think less of anyone's musical taste for liking anything by her. She's amazing.

No, I agree, I am a big fan-- but, like I said, that is one song of hers that I'd rather listen to in private. Mostly thanks to "She's Having a Baby". Fuck you, John Hughes.

Re: Musical Guilty Pleasures.
You reach a certain age and you stop feeling guilty about liking something but with that said there are bands I enjoy that I should probably be embarrassed to like. Paramore has this song called "that's what you get" which I think is a pretty perfect pop song. I like the song they did for the Twilight soundtrack too. Actually yeah that is embarrassing.
