Re: The God topic
so i used to know this woman years ago. she was a good 10 or 15 years older than me - probably in her late 30s. she said she thought of life as similar to going to school - when you die, maybe you were moving on to a university to get a new degree.Harry Lime wrote:Listen, everyone has a prayer. Atheist or faith-based. Everyone wakes up in the middle of the night with a wish on their mind. That's a prayer.
I'm interested in the contemplative man. This is News & "Debate", I know, but I'm not here to argue. There is a lot to gain from learning how we each look inward. This thread is not a dead end. We can only move forward. It's a postive thing. If you have the nerve to do so, I want to read people spilling their guts. I could write for hours about my thoughts towards the possible infinite, but I don't always want to indulge myself. I want to hear everyone else. So please, share.
i didn't mind that idea too much, but she was born and raised in california, so
anyway, when I am introspective about life and death and does anything happen after death of the physical etc - i am met with only a blank wall of thought.
whatever is on your 'wall' (to wax metaphorically) is really up to you, ihrm. no one really cares what anyone else thinks about this stuff unless you either agree with them or vehemently disagree and choose to challenge them on their own beliefs or lack of belief in god, afterlife whatever.
i have never felt terribly connected to the idea of god nor to the idea of having more to do as a 'being' when i die. and experiencing death as a child really didn't influence that other than to underscore and clarify for myself that we live for as long as we can, we suffer sometimes, we don't suffer sometimes, and then we die.
we know nothing of what happens next, and we likely never will so people who don't have any religious affiliations can only look to what they know to be facts.
I would love to know my mom again after I die, but I'm not counting on it. it's not that complicated really - if being religious and having a defined set of beliefs give people a sense of confidence and security in the world, then I'm cool with that, but it never did that for me so i don't go searching for further "answers" about believing in something because it doesn't make a difference to the here and now.
this is what life has given me (given all of us) so this is what I'll try my best to work with, should i die and find out I was mistaken, and god is waiting for me to reprimand me for my lack of faith, i'm sure i'll have to accept that too. ultimately that's all I think anyone can do - accept what you have, work with it the best you can, and try not to be too much of a dick along the way.
everything else is a crap shoot.

Nope, that's not a prayer, just an attempt to "accidentally" wake up one's spouse.

If I think too much I can get overwhelmed by the grace by which we live our lives with death over our shoulders

Re: The God topic
A few years ago, a series of shitty things happened to me in a few hours I can't quite remember (no one died or anything; I'm talking about white people problems like "the cable guy didn't show up in time.") and I had a thought I often do in stressful situations I cannot control: maybe this was always going to happen.
It's a thought derived from Vonnegut's Slaughterhouse Five. The Tralfamadorian's had the ability to see the extra dimension of time. They knew how the world was going to end but they didn't fret about it or try to change it because that's the way it was always going to end. Then it struck me: this is my religion. Fatalism is just an unproven belief that helps me deal with my problems. And I'm referencing a very anti-religious guy when I think of it.
So while I don't necessarily agree with the "there's no atheists in a foxhole" sentiment, I think we all rely on some belief to cope with life. And it's usually just that, a belief.
