I'm real tempted to start a thread highlighting how the processes of coal power fucks up the environment.

Hey, guy, I power my house on a careful blend of children's tears and puppy gizzards. So really, I'm outside the problem.
Can you all say the same?

Coal mining is the source of Thorium, and Thorium solves our problems for the next 200-300 or until graphene-based solar cells and batteries can be manufactured on an industrial scale.Green Habit wrote:I'm real tempted to start a thread highlighting how the processes of coal power fucks up the environment.

Matt Damon wasn't in Thor... That story makes no sense.

I only skimmed those articles, but how is the mining for hydrocarbons and thorium intertwined? Is it necessary for mining only for thorium to be as disruptive as typical coal mining is?broken iris wrote:Coal mining is the source of Thorium, and Thorium solves our problems for the next 200-300 or until graphene-based solar cells and batteries can be manufactured on an industrial scale.Green Habit wrote:I'm real tempted to start a thread highlighting how the processes of coal power fucks up the environment.

I do agree that we should be going full bore on making thorium more promising.

Thorium is one of the byproducts of coal mining (as well as mining rare earth metals). Federal regulations demand it be disposed of at great cost to miners and processors. Industry literally spends millions and millions each year throw away >90% of the energy gathered when producing each ton of coal we get from mines.Green Habit wrote:I only skimmed those articles, but how is the mining for hydrocarbons and thorium intertwined? Here's Los Alamos on recent advances in Thorium production:

from the article above:simple schoolboy wrote:http://www.climatecentral.org/news/frac ... ught-16876
On the topic of fracking and Matt Damon.
- But natural gas power plants still use water, and in many cases, new natural gas wells could create a new demand for water in a local area where no previous demand for water existed.
For example, he said, a new natural gas-fired power plant could replace a coal plant in an area where water supplies are adequate. But the natural gas for the new plant could come from an oil and gas field far away in a dry area where no previous demand for water existed.
That could create drought vulnerability in a local area even though natural gas power may consume less water than coal statewide, he said.
“We’re still seeing water development for fracking,” Tidwell said. “It’s still a very local issue.”

The worst fallacy recorded history creates is that it's easy to predict history. I have a hard time pretending either way that I can understand complex processes based on news articles or that I can confidently measure judgment calls based on the summations of those with a stake in the game.
