Re: The Chicago Bears
So the Cutler deal is basically 3 franchise tag years, plus 4 unguaranteed contract years with no cap hit consequences. (He actually gets paid per game that he's on the active roster for the last 4 years)
Brilliant deal for the Bears, and Cutler is betting on himself in a good situation. Pretty much what we expected.

Re: The Chicago Bears
There's nothing left to say. Cliff Stein and the rest of the Bears brain trust figured out a way to structure Jay Cutler's deal in such a way where the Bears would not be on the line for the full 7 years of the deal and, if they cut him, would not have to take a cap hit. It was pure genius and no one else in the entire industry had yet to figure out a way to do what the Bears just accomplished.Fuck You Jobu wrote:Do tell . . .Chris_H_2 wrote:Of course he is . . .pnjguy wrote:Cliff Stein is considered the best in the business.Chris_H_2 wrote:You guys realize that all teams hire cap specialists, right?

Re: The Chicago Bears
But cap hits are not considered equally, and are instead evaluated dependent on other variables (like other existing contracts and amounts applied to each respective year's cap). And the overall value of the deal will always require a higher cap hit. So it's not at exactly apples to apples, and particularly worthless in trying to use those guys anecdotally to suggest that Bears are better than just about everyone in the NFL after everything (well, except winning).pnjguy wrote:Cap hits for the first 5 years of their new deals.Chris_H_2 wrote:There's nothing left to say. You're right regarding how the cap hits are not created equal, but to say they are worthless in comparing deals is not entirely true. The reason is because there is someone responsible for the other contracts on the books, and the availability they've allowed to sign someone else and that is the same person who negotiated the deals I posted above. You can put yourself in a position to strike good deals or you can kick the bucket down the road and suffer the consequences later.Chris_H_2 wrote:But cap hits are not considered equally, and are instead evaluated dependent on other variables (like other existing contracts and amounts applied to each respective year's cap). I got bad numbers on the cap hits for Cutler, they haven't been disclosed those yet, that's why I edited my post and therefore can't claim the deal is as good as i'm making it out to be. (I guess you didn't like the adjective "brilliant"?) As far as Cliff Stein, I can only go by what I read and what others have said about him. And they have said that he's considered one of the best. I don't know why that offends your sensibilities or way you'd waste time to care. The Bears haven't been good at many things over the last 15 years, Cliff Stein's been the exception. Isn't that sad enough?

It doesn't offend my sensibilities in the least. I just find it comical that the seemingly mundane is characterized as Eisteinian simply because it's the Bears. Nothing personal.pnjguy wrote:You're right regarding how the cap hits are not created equal, but to say they are worthless in comparing deals is not entirely true. I see that they guaranteed $11.8 million to Tim Jennings. Not bad for a 30-yr. who was the last scholarship offer from Georgia.
