I restricted my list to legitimately new music that was released this year, but there were some great archival releases this year too:

Bob Dylan - Another Self Portrait: The Bootleg Series Volume 10
Miles Davis - Live in Europe 1969: The Bootleg Series Volume 2
Pearl Jam - Vault #3, Constitution Hall (Nice to see these releases finally happening, I wish they consisted of more than a CDR in a cardboard sleeve with a sticker on it)
John Coltrane - Afro Blue Impressions (reissue of posthumous 1977 that had never been given a satisfactory CD release)
Neil Young - Live at the Cellar Door (I'm ready for Neil to start mining his electric tours for this series but it's difficult to be dissatisfied when the acoustic stuff they keep putting out is this gorgeous)

Biggest disappointments:
Kanye West - Yeezus
Pearl Jam - Lightning Bolt (not bad, but the first time a record from my favorite band felt like such a non-event)

Biggest pleasant surprises which also happened to be Everly Brothers cover albums:
Bonnie 'Prince' Billy and Dawn McCarthy - What the Brothers Sang
Billie Joe Armstrong and Norah Jones - Foreverly

Other memorable moments:
Wendy Carlos's Twin's compilation of complete Nirvana B-sides which has been in regular rotation since September. Lament's generous gift of U2 B-sides which kept me company as I went about my Christmas shopping this year. Compiling four CD's worth of Bonnie 'Prince' Billy rarities. Buying a copy of The Smashing Pumpkins' "Aeroplane Flies High" box off eBay, listening to it for the first time since 9th grade. Going on a huge Grateful Dead kick for the first six months of the year and finally developing an appreciation for all the components of their sound that I had been cynical about for years (Bob Weir's general presence in the band, for instance). Elvis Costello's recording of "It Had to Be You" from the soundtrack to "Boardwalk Empire." Listening to a ton of Christmas music. Briefly reliving my sophomore year summer while being forced to listen to nothing but classic rock radio for a week as I hauled stuff from our old house to our new house in a friend's CD-player-less truck. Getting Louis Armstrong's "Hello Dolly" album at a comic book shop for $1 and playing it on repeat as I drove around town buying up stuff for a surprise anniversary dinner for my wife. Nels Cline's "Initiate." Some obscure Sonny Rollins albums with Jim Hall on guitar. Chud's Mynabirds mix.

Are there more words from you written about that recent Dylan collection in another thread, KD? I'm curious to read your thoughts on it. '70-'71 is one of my favorite periods of Dylan's career, so I was ecstatic to receive that collection for Christmas (Christmas was actually on New Year's Day for me, so I haven't fully absorbed the tracks yet...)

I don't think so, maybe just a few offhand comments in the Dylan thread. It's a wonderful collection though, and it's one of my favorite periods too.

It's not tidy, but yeah. How picky are you about bitrates and file quality and such?
