Well due to a change of plans I'm no longer going, and I'm OK with it. I somehow hope that PJ come to their senses after this tour and go back to a mid-stadium style of tour (i.e. Rod Laver Arena-esque venues).

Very much looking forward to this, guys. Other issues aside, I've never failed to have a great time at a Pearl Jam show and I doubt this will be an exception

Do you think there’s been a lot of change to your music since you started? A natural evolution as to how you guys work as a band?

You know, we’re always evolving for sure. I think when Ed first joined the band he was still discovering his super powers in a way (laughs). It was really Jeff and I that were the veterans at that point.

But Ed quickly proved himself to be a leader in the band, the artistic leader by far. He could step out and play a ukulele by himself in front of 60 thousand people and make something happen and you have to respect that charisma and gravity. So I think his evolution is our bands evolution.

But everyone still writes for the band, everyone has still written lyrics over the course of our ten albums. We still share in how the band operates, we make business decisions together. It’s really still a group effort. But I’d be lying to say Ed’s not the leader of the band, he really is and deservedly so. We work best when he’s feeling comfortable and is in a position to lead.

they made their best records when they were young, had something to prove, and were mad at the world for being hard to understand. that's where the creative fire came from. For all we know those albums could have been even better if they were comfortable with each other.

This is gossipy but whatever. I think he is sort of clearing his conscience by exaggerating this lately. I think he's aware he gave a not so decent reputation to Ed back in the day by saying in interviews he was contemplating leaving the band because he lost control to Ed. Stone and Jeff made it sound as if artistic control was forcefully taken away from them. I think Ed took that position because it was more or less vacant to begin with. You can't realistically direct the music of a band when your contribution is more or less limited to writing riffs or better said it's the only thing you're prolific enough at. I think Stone learned that from his many side projects who never really reached anybody but a portion of PJ's fanbase. Stone always wanted a successful band and the fact that the only really successful band he was ever part of is Pearl Jam I'm sure impacts his views on this things. The downside to this is that he seems to have lost confidence as a songwriter because even if he isn't particularly prolific he is able to write interesting songs every now and then.
My impression is that their battle of egos affected their ability to judge their music a lot. Stone and Ed in particularly seem to have moved back from what caused tension in the band and the music got safer as a consequence. I'd take a Vitalogy/No Code confident Ed imposing his way for Gateway over that kindergardeny sing-along thing Jeff made out of it for example.

I agree with this actually. It's not a matter of being comfortable with each other. I think that if whoever was in charge wasn't priority #1 for part of the band and instead they where more constructive and created a decent songwriting dynamic between themselves and got a better understanding of what their individual skills really are they would have something stronger to rely on now when they're past their creative pick.

Yes, in the sense that it's just easier that way. I think the same goes for B'OB's contribution to the arrangements.

Maybe there should be more push back on Ed rather than less, if only because it may push him to greater heights. If they just follow his lead now there's less of a check on if he goes down a wrong path.
