I still think most PJ songs that casual or non fans know are Ten songs like Alive, Jeremy, Black and Even Flow. For those that really don't know any rock music, they might still acknowledge Alive if they hear it. It's THE Pearl Jam album.

The kind of promotion it had compared to the rest of their records has a huge role in this. It's naive to think otherwise.

Kids (<18 or so) today generally think of PJ the same way they would The Beatles. Or Foreigner. Or the Eagles. Or Pink Floyd. Or Tom Petty. It's all classic rock to them

I can't remember the last time i met a Nirvana fan, or heard a Nirvana song in a random place. They were huge after Cobain died though, especially Smells Like Teen Spirit.

Ten is the best rock album ever released. Hell it's the best music ever created. It's the most influential album of all times. In fact every album conceived after its release is largely influenced by it. It made every other piece of music irrelevant by comparison and it still does. It's innovative, ground breaking, not derivative at all even if it borrowed a solo from a band that borrowed it from another.

I thought of Jagged Little Pill because of how the impact Ten had is described here. It reminded me of it. Oh google tells me they're making a Broadway musical based on it.

I'm not sure why we think so poorly of teenagers as far as music knowledge. When I was 18 I knew all about bands that were decades old and that was when you had to take a chance and buy the tape or cd to listen to something off of word of mouth. A kid today could have any bands entire discography in 5 minutes for free. I loved all sorts of bands from the 60s when I was a kid it didn't mean I was going to their reunion concerts and buying their shitty new albums.

Before I got into the band a few years back you could have told me the lead singer was an hawaiian named boom gaspar who drowned before they put out a second album and Id have had no problem believing it. Until I Wikipedia'd 'boom gaspar' to see if that was his real name.
