Sometimes I think Do The Evolution might just be the last truly great song the band released. I've loved a lot of stuff since (Sleight of Hand, Sad, Rival, Insignificance, Marker, Parachutes, Just Breathe). But Do The Evolution might just beat them all.VinylGuy wrote:sometimes i find myself listening to it, and the feeling is " damn this one is amazing".

I think it is in my top 10 currently. It was in my top 5 at one point, and if I had to do an objective list I might stick it there.

Well that's an awkward phrase. Sounds like the ex has the clap now?Of course, not every album ages so well: Just as it's natural to revisit a former love, only to learn that the well has been poisoned, you're also going to put on old records and wonder how you ever connected to them in the first place.

Yield's Concept
Was listening to Yield the other day, I was starting to see a uniting theme, I may have kinda missed before. In the past, I felt there was a song or two about religion/spirituality. Mainly Faithful and Given to Fly... maybe Do the Evolution/Pilate, but never saw a deeper theme.
Then I really listened to No Way. Really listened to the lyrics. That seems quite spiritual to me. In fact, to me, it almost felt like it was written from God's perspective. I mean the "let's call in an angel" part makes it quite obvious, I'm not sure why I missed it before. Read the lyrics. I think they even work better discounting Ed's contributions.
Then you got Faithful. You also have Given to Fly. No need to elaborate there. Brain of J provides a bit of reference with the relived parts. You got Wishlist which has direct references to religion. Then there's Pilate. Of course, this always seemed religious on the surface, and I guess the further you dig, it makes the connection. As do Jeff's comments on the book it supposedly stems from.
I think Do the Evolution is really interesting to inspect lyrically, because certainly this song has religious connotations. Red Dot, doesn't really have lyrics. MFC, admittedly doesn't fit this theme to me, so I'm not going to try to reach there. Yet, low light does. To me, this one is really captures a spiritual essence, almost like entering death. Ament said this was a song in response to Pilate. In Hiding seems like a cleansing of sorts, be it spiritual or not. All those Yesterdays - a nice lyrical extension of No Way, written by Gossard again.
I guess, I wonder if they purposefully wanted to write religiously themed songs at that time, or if it just kinda came out that way? What do you think? Is it just a collection of songs and random?

I'm really surprised we didn't have a Yield thread or two to discuss this in.

There's a distinction between discussing an album itself and the album's underlying concept.cutuphalfdead wrote:I'm really surprised we didn't have a Yield thread or two to discuss this in.
