PARIS — French authorities have filed preliminary charges against Bob Dylan over a 2012 interview in which he is quoted comparing Croatians to Nazis and the Ku Klux Klan.
The charges of "public insult and inciting hate" were filed against the musician in mid-November, Paris prosecutor's office spokeswoman Agnes Thibault-Lecuivre said Tuesday.
They stem from a lawsuit by a Croatian community group in France over remarks in an interview in Rolling Stone magazine in September 2012.
Speaking about race relations in the United States, Dylan was quoted as saying: "If you got a slave master or Klan in your blood, blacks can sense that. That stuff lingers to this day. Just like Jews can sense Nazi blood and the Serbs can sense Croatian blood."
A lawyer for the Croatian group, Ivan Jurasinovic, said it is not seeking monetary damages but wants Dylan, "a singer who is liked and respected in Croatia, to present an apology to the Croatian people."
He said the Croatian community in France was upset by the remarks, but said he did not know why Croatians in Croatia or the United States, where Rolling Stone is based, have not filed similar suits. France, home to about 30,000 Croatians, has strict laws punishing hate speech and racist remarks.
Representatives for Dylan, who performs in France regularly, could not immediately be reached for comment.
The charges were filed two days before Dylan received a French government honor at the Culture Ministry Nov. 13 but were not publicly confirmed until this week

Re: Dylan
My wife gave me this for Christmas and I haven't gone a day without listening. It took me a week to get to disc 2 and HOLY SHIT. The two songs with the Band from 1969 are ridiculous. Highway 61 Revisited shows that Dylan might be the best performer of all time. I wish the Band and Dylan sounded like this in 75.Kevin Davis wrote:Some new stuff from Bootleg Series 10. I have never owned Self Portrait or New Morning so most of these songs are new to me, but this bootleg is in my top 5 favorite Dylan records.

Oh man, what a joy you are in for. "New Morning" is a beautiful, beautiful album--top 10 stuff for me. "Self Portrait" ain't bad either but I suspect the overdubs will be a little jarring after cutting your teeth on the stripped back, probably superior Bootleg Series versions.Hatfield wrote: I have never owned Self Portrait or New Morning
Glad you're liking this set, it has been in my rotation pretty nonstop since September. All told this is probably my favorite era for Dylan as a singer.

Another Self Portrait is pretty great. Say what you will, Bobby knows how to mine his archives.

Thank You! I've always heard of the Club Front boot, but never had a chance to actually hear it. This is good. Supposedly, Frankie Lee and Judas Priest was Jerry's favorite song and he made Bob re-learn it for the Tour. It sounds great here.

Is this old news? They are putting out the 30th Anniversiary on DVD. That Masters of War is one of the greatest things Ed has done. I'll like to have that remastered and on DVD. Neil doing Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues isn't too shabby either.

Re: Dylan
"Self Portrait" has some kitschy arrangements but the singing and song selection is wonderful. Its reputation suffers from a lot of the expectations that were placed on Dylan at the time by his fans, who were already on edge after "Nashville Skyline" and who saw "Self Portrait" as a kind of last straw. A lot of the old school Dylan fans I know say they were majorly put off by it when it was released, some for many years, but eventually came around on it. In hindsight it's a lot easier to see it as just another one of his many impulse recordings rather than the work that held the fate of his entire career in its hands.
Harry is right though, the bootleg series release is even better.
