Bill Callahan - Dream River [September 17]

Post by Heathen »

Bill Callahan retired his Smog alias in 2007 but has contined to make lovely, downcast folk under his own name, like 2011's Apocalypse. He's just announced the follow-up to that which is titled Dream River and will be out September 17 via his longtime home of Drag City. No songs have been released from it yet, but you can check out the tracklist below.

Bill Callahan - Dream River tracklist:
1. "The Sing"
2. "Javelin Unlanding"
3. "Small Plane"
4. "Spring "
5. "Ride My Arrow"
6. "Summer Painter"
7. "Seagull"
8. "Winter Road"

Color me excited! Love everything BC does, but I especially love his solo-moniker work. Also, I am always happy to give Drag City Records my money; LPs priced at $14-$18, and free shipping on every order? This is how music distribution should go.

not sure what's up with Drag City releasing all these Dub remixes (first OM, now Callahan) but they're selling a dub preview of the non dub new album.

Album is going to be reissued as a dub album, I loved the single so I'm actually really looking forward to this.
CALLAHAN'S DREAM RIVER NEWLY DUBBED 'HAVE FUN WITH GOD'
posted December 5th, 2013

Dub is a spiritual, abstract, visceral, mystical thing. Finite and Infinite at the same time. Deeply rooted in the earth and embracing outer space. Don’t be fooled by names, Dub has come and gone. Dub is a ghost, a duppy. A duppy of a childhood guppy. Flushed and thriving in the sewers and the swamps. Bill Callahan, no stranger to a good flushing, has thus taken his #1 Album of the Year, Dream River, and turned it dub! The whole thing now, dub- not just a coupla songs, like you thought. "Expanding Dub" b/w "High In The Mid-40s Dub" was simply the first message, mon! Now MC B.C. brings the whole production, and calls it, Have Fun With God. The tantalizing, liquid flow of Dream River as you know it will cease to exist; except, that it won't. It will exist in its earthly form and intergalactic, or heavenly, form. For a while. Or for a bit... we'll see! How does Dream River sound when it's off this earthly plane? Time to Have Fun With God and find out - the riddim riddle begins, on LP and CD, January 21st, 2014!

Called that one. I got through about 1/3 of it and immediately went to Drag City's website and ordered "Apocalypse" and "Sometimes I Wish We Were an Eagle" too. Beautiful, chilling stuff.

Glad you're enjoying, KD.

One article that really affected my view of Dream River was Steven Hyden's interview with Callahan. I haven't read it since it was posted, but the theory he posits about the album being a sort of journey into the unconscious seemed quite fitting to me at the time (and still does, although I'm wary of trying to force a "concept" onto an album like this). It's worth a read, for those interested: http://www.grantland.com/story/_/id/965 ... ream-river

I really, really like "Apocalypse"--"Astral Weeks" as recited by Leonard Cohen. Brilliant stuff. "Sometimes I Wish We Were an Eagle" is good too but I find myself drifting off during the last few tracks--both "Apocalypse" and "Dream River" keep me pretty riveted throughout.
