I'll make a proper thread since the nominations are out now. Thoughts?

They seem reasonable...I want Scorsese to win this one, but it seems Cuarón can have it too. I have yet to see a lot of movies from this list though.

Gravity shouldn't be anywhere on that list... except perhaps in a "special effects" category.
And Sandra Bullock getting nominated alongside Streep and Blanchett is a joke.

Cuaron should get a nod for directing. Gravity is a beautifully-composed visual tour-de-force. Especially that first long shot, which is almost balletical in how it unfolds. I think people who are writing Gravity off based on the relative weakness of some of its dialogue and its threadbare story are missing just how impressive it is on the level of visual storytelling.

American Hustle was not best picture worthy. That script was a mess.

I think I agree with you, though I enjoyed that flick immensely. The cast was great, though.

I'm a little upset that Frances Ha was snubbed.

I don't know, I think McConaughey is a pretty hefty front-runner at this point. As is Leto for supporting actor.

Gravity should be nominated, but Bullock shouldn't be anywhere near an oscar.

Not a huge fan of Hustle, either.

i had such a visceral hatred for the character of frances that i was unable to enjoy the film. i acknowledge the adroitly-handled dialogue and direction, however, and aim to give the movie another try. it was kind of like dealing with a cinematic version of the Dev account.

My experience with Dev (so far) is the exact opposite as my experience with Frances Ha.
