I feel like a lot of the more rhythm-based genres-- like reggae, for example, which hinges on a very specific syncopation of drums, bass and guitars-- are a lot more limited than something as broad as "grunge", and often splinter off into subgenres and variations that tend to be a lot more interesting (like "dub").

Most of it is virtuoso show off crap to me, but Battles has a few good ones. Early Foals has some cool math sounding songs, too.

skill based music isn't an unfamiliar 'thing' - and that was something I wanted to comment on last night actually - there's a ton of rock bands from the 70s and 80s that I pretty much grew up with that were revered for the technical skill of the musicians more than any true joy the music lent itself to. I could be wrong about these bands but I'm thinking Rush, even Van Halen for Eddie's guitar playing, Jethro Tull...
it was either intellectual crowds that would appreciate the technique or complete burnouts who would appreciate the mastery of the playing (dude! Eddie was playing so fast I couldn't see his fingers moving!! blah blah blah- whatever).

in general it don't have an issue with that form of musical appreciation, mainly because it was ever present during my 'formative years' - it was normal... but as I developed my own likes/dislikes musically, it wasn't among the type of music I was interested in -

honestly I expected to be more put off by what I listened in this thread. but it's not un-enjoyable, it's just different from what I'd go to - that probably has more to do with the limitations I have as a music fan than the limitations of this 'subgenre'

also, I'm put off by the term subgenre. it's feels a little trite to me. is it necessary to create a name that appears to describe something very specifically yet if you're unfamiliar with it, it describes nothing about the music? that's pretentious to me.

I never liked the word grunge either - it was another made up word to define something that was just as easily defined as alternative to me - but again it's a matter of what you appreciate, and this generation strikes me as appreciating the specific, even when done with a bit of ironic aftertaste...

I don't get that. No genre describes the music if you're unfamiliar with the term. Like no word describes shit if you don't know what it means.
