it certainly sounds like this person still holds the band in some esteem in spite of the last seven years,

Well, I have been sadly disappointed with "Backspacer" and "Lightning Bolt." To me they just seem lazy. Not shooting for anything higher than putting some songs onto vinyl and releasing it.

But I still do hold the band in high regard. You had greatness in you, it can't just disappear completely. Has to appear again. Remember those horrendously bad Clint Eastwood directed films like "The Rookie" and "Blood Work"? Well, I held on through those lazy days and was rewarded with "Unforgiven," "Million Dollar Baby," "Flags Of Our Fathers," "Gran Torino,"... The talent is there, it can't completely disappear. We will have another "Yield" again from Pearl Jam.

Probably. But if I don't recognize the song as I hear it, how would I know it came form the album I never listened to? Could be some obscure B-side, a cover, an outtake... I don't hear a song I don't recognize and think, "Man, that's from the Avacado album."

Won't go see bands anymore in arenas. Yeah, me and 19,000 others enjoying an intimate live performance. That don't work. Intimate and Madison Square Garden don't go together.

I went to see Pearl Jam when they did that Lollapalooza tour back in, I suppose, 1991. Smallish place, up front near the stage. That's a concert to me. Arenas? Watching ants on stage, or worse, watching the band on a large video screen (heck, I should just save myself a hundred bucks and watch it on a screen next day on youtube) is not a concert going experience.

i never understood the need to see the musicians playing. i get that people think smaller venues sound better, but im there to hear music, not to watch musicians play.

im also sure people who have seen pearl jam at msg will disagree w/ you. however, there will always be people here who will look to point out what they dont like about pearl jam now, so i'm sure you will also find people who agree w you as well.

i never understood the need to see the musicians playing. i get that people think smaller venues sound better, but im there to hear music, not to watch musicians play.

Just curious, have you ever stood right at the foot of the stage for any concert? Two feet away from the singer, the guitarist, the amplifiers? If you have then you know that experience is a billion times better than that of sitting four hundred rows away from the band.

Also, being a guitar player I love to see the notes the guitar players are playing on the fretboards of their guitars. Plus being so close also allows me to grab the set list taped to the stage floor. But mainly the experience of being right in the front, amongst the pushing and slamming bodies, seeing the sweat and the hard work of the band, hearing their in-between song talk, catching a guitar pick or two, making direct eye contact with the musicians, being assaulted by walls of amplified guitar....you don't get that sitting against the far wall up in Madison Square Garden. Whole different night out when you see a band in a reasonably sized club.

I like being in front at small shows and being in the back at large ones. I get different things out of both, but both are cool. Mostly I got hearing damage from being front row at ACL a few years ago. Small venues are fun, but seems like most of the time the volume is actually lower. Big shows from the back are actually louder! I dont get that.

Couldnt give a rat's ass about making eye contact with the musicians though, lol.

yeah, in 2000 i had front row seats to pearl jam and eddie vedder gave me his pick after like the 3rd song. he pretty much stared at us at the end of porch. it was awesome, but making direct eye contact w/ him isnt why i see his band...or any band really.

the loudness of being in front i get. i saw albert hammond a few years ago and you could pretty much feel the music coming out of the speakers. i just get into a sorta trance at some concerts that i dont pay attention to anything but the music.

Maybe I can explain it better using a different band. I saw The Clash numerous times right up front. Believe me, being two feet from those guys is a hell of a different concert going experience than being two hundred yards away.

i think this is where i, and probably a bunch of people who have seen pearl jam and msg, disagree. i dont need to see them to feel the music, i need to hear the music to feel the music.

Oh, and +1 for being close, where you can see the interaction between the musicians, facial expressions, mistakes, etc. No comparison for me. Venue size doesn't really matter.

I don't think anyone is saying seeing a show in the back of an arena is superior to seeing a show in the first row of a tiny club, but I seriously question a person's appreciation for music if they can't find a way to enjoy a great artist in any venue. It's not like the people who are choosing to see Pearl Jam at MSG are choosing to not see them at the Mercury Lounge. It's either MSG or nothing. I'm sorry you can't find anything of value in seeing a band in a venue that large. It can be a transcendent experience. Some of the best shows I've ever seen have been with 60,000 other people. Some have been with 150. It all depends on the specific show. Pearl Jam happens to be (or was) very capable of putting on phenomenal shows in bigger places.

I hope somewhere there is a person who stopped by a Pearl Jam rehearsal the week Ed flew up to Seattle and has never gone to see them play because "After seeing them play for free in a 15 x 15 room with only three other people there watching, you realize how stupid the idea of paying $4 to see them in a club with 150 other people is."
