I think with sex, the 10,000 time better version involves more participants. Of course that's not for me, my ego can only handle not pleasing one lady at a time.

Think of it the unpleased ladies the way some people think about litter. If you accidentally drop your gum wrapper in a room with one other person, you'd better take care of it. If there are fifty people there, someone else will probably pick it up and all will end well.

Where was the really small Lollapalooza show you saw in 1992? It's weird to me that a tour that was taking place in ampitheatres and fairgrounds and places that generally held 18,000-30,000 people had a really intimate stop in the middle of it, but I suppose it could have stopped in a small town somewhere along the way.

That was out on Long Island in New York -- the Jones Beach Theater.

That place has since been renovated to hold abot 15,000, but back when Lollapalooza played there with Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Chilli Peppers... the place only held about 8,000. Very, very small place. And if you were up front as I was it seemed like the concert was being held on your high school soccer field.

Bottom line is this: you may have the time of your life seeing Pearl Jam at cavernous Madison Square Garden. And I am sure thousands upon thousands do. But in the back of your head there will be a voice saying, "Had I seen this exact same show at a club, it would have been 10,000 times better." That voice would be 100% correct.

I hope you apply this logic to everything in your life. I'd like to think that one day after sleeping with your wife you thought "Had I just had that exact experience with a ten-years-younger version of her, it would have been 10,000 times better" and then just stopped sleeping with her.

There is not a single Pearl Jam show in a big venue I saw from 1995-2011 that I would trade for seeing them play a 45 minute, all Ten set in the afternoon at an ampitheatre, even if it was in 1992. I'd venture that most people here would agree. Let's not act like 8,000+ is the same thing as the Bowery Ballroom. The Reading Arena show I was at in 2004 was to 9,000 people. I'm gonna start talking about that like it was some ultra-intimate experience that could never be replicated.

Did anyone here who saw any of the Jones Beach shows in 2000 think "Eh, I bet the Lollapalooza set here in 1992 was better" when they left? Or ever? Go ahead, be honest if you did...

Boy, you don't know much about the thrill of seeing a band as they are becoming something special. So you would rather see The Beatles at Shea Stadium than at The Cavern Club. Got it.

Seeing Pearl Jam at those Lollapalloza shows back in '92 playing their vibrant set from their first album is a heck of a lot better than seeing them at the 18,000 seat arena in Brooklyn playing songs from "Lightning Bolt." And I don't think you will find anyone that disagrees with that.

I think Lament's point is that, for many, there's a gigantic area between those two extremes; it's not an either/or choice.

The main point here is where/when you first saw any band. If you saw The Beatles at The Cavern Club in 1961 there is very little chance that you would love seeing them perform at Shea Stadium. But if you first saw them at Shea Stadium as tens of thousands did, then that is going to be a hard thing to top for a concert experience.

Look, I saw Prince live (once again at Jones Beach) for the first time loooong after he began his career. But guess what? I loved my Prince concert that I attended; however, I realize he probably was a heck of a lot better live back in the '80s -- more energy, better band, better set list. But it is what it is. I saw Prince in 2000 so that is my Prince concert experience -- and I loved it. Someone seeing Pearl Jam at Madison Square Garden today will love it, too. But no way could it top an early show. The trick is to be savvy (or lucky) enough to be able to spot a band that is on the rise and see them then.

I saw radiohead in a big venue and a theatre in the same year and the big venue was the better show.

Long ago, I saw my high school band at a pep rally in the gym and at the football game that night. They were better at the game.

I saw BRMC a year before the first album came out in a bar opening up for The Dandy Warhols with about ten other people in attendance thanks to a blizzard. They were light years better headlining at the Theatre of Living Arts a few years later.

Same deal with the Strokes. And the Killers.

Once you get over the jerk-yourself-off factor off it all, any band worth their salt will get better down the road.
