There is something about this song that reminds me of the time it came out. In a way it's timeless, and yet it lifts me into memories of childhood.

One of Pearl Jam's few straight forward love songs. It has a few meanings, love of the girl first and foremost, love of the ocean, and love of being with the girl at the ocean.

I hope to hear this in Sydney next week. Such a beautiful flowing rhythm.

With every passing year, this gets closer and closer to being my favorite song on Ten. At this point it's probably only behind Porch.

Far and away my favourite from Ten.
I have the remastered Ten on my iPod except I kept the original mix of Oceans. It's just better.

One of the first unofficial, overpriced bootlegs I bought was Den Haag 1992. I remember listening to this song as the opener my freshman year of college -- crystal clear soundboard version. This was quintessential Pearl Jam for me at the time. This song always reminds of Pearl Jam from that early period.

Listening to this now outside the context of Ten.

Timeless is a correct way to describe it. It could have been on just about any of their albums and fit. It stands out from the rest of Ten, yet still fits in.

Awesome song, definitely a precursor of what was to come from these guys. For everyone that says that Vitalogy or No Code or Binaural were their first "experiments", I'll show you someone who forgets about this tune.

Yesterday I was about to post that this song is definitely the odd man out on Ten. But it and Release are from the same space. And weirdly, both achieve their aims admirably.

It's not a competition but Oceans has it by a nose over Release.

This is probably the only ocean/wave related song in the whole PJ catalogue that I don't find nauseatingly lame (lyrically). I love the tom driven groove and the beautiful melodic bassline, it was a track that certainly stood out on the album as something different. I remember getting chills the first time I heard it on the album, and again during Unplugged. Such a great track.

It's only been in the past six months or so, but Oceans has passed Release for me too. It's probably the only track from that era that just keeps getting better with age (for me at least). It randomly came on over the summer and I listened to it for the first time in probably a decade, and I couldn't believe how good it was.

Yeah, Oceans might be my favorite on Ten at this point too. It's either that, Release, or Porch.

How do you go a decade without hearing this song? Do you just mean the studio version?

No, any version. I suppose I did hear it live in 2007 though, so it would have only been six years. I don't really ever listen to bootlegs, and Ten is a record I very rarely play.

Gotcha. I was going to ask about bootlegs. It's not played too much live, but still enough to hear it once in awhile on a boot.

First time I saw them live in 98, they opened with this. Great memory of that.

This song is one of PJ's high-water moments.

Jill could never inspire a song like this, even though she's hotter. Weird.

What a strange thought to take away from this song.

I bet Jeff's girl Pandora could inspire a good Oceans-ish tune. She's got a sexy name.
