I don't understand your point. If a band writes a bunch of songs that end up on the cutting room floor and never get put on albums, why should I (or their audience) give a shit? The songs may as well not exist if they don't exist to me; if I haven't heard them. It's a pretty tenuous argument to make that because a song like "Pendulum" proves they are still writing songs like "Pendulum", that must mean they're still enthusiastic about writing great songs. Because people generally decide the worth of a band based on what gets commercially released; everything else is total speculation, and treasure hunts by uber-fans for songs that may or may not exist, in the hope you'll find songs to keep you interested. I've never been that kind of fan, even when Pearl Jam were in their heyday. The closest I ever got to caring about b-sides and rarities was Lost Dogs. So for me (and doubtless the vast majority of other people) Pearl Jam are the sum of whatever gets put on their albums, for better or worse. And if they're secretly writing great songs and not releasing them, it's almost worse than if they were just drying up creatively.

I like this song. And I like backspacer. But I cannot imagine how or where it would place on that record
