Planes was done by DisneyToon Studios, which does direct-to-video movies, but Lasseter loves those goddamn Dollars from merchandising related to the Cars movies, so it was released in theaters.

This has probably been covered, but did anyone else cringe when seeing Darth Vader in a Disney World ad?

It's so counterintuitive there aren't even words to explain it.

Yes, I saw the ad. And, no, I didn't cringe. Why would you?

Star Wars has been at MGM or whatever its called now for decades. You'll never see a happier kid then when he gets to fight with Darth Vader. The Indiana Jones thing is awesome. Disney rules.

I wonder what the red switch on Vader's chest does, and if it can be a liability in a sword fight.

Is anyone else hoping that while they are rebooting SW, and making tons of new movies, that they also remake the prequels? I'd love to pretend the ones Lucas gave us did not happen. To this day, I still can't understand how the hell he dropped the ball so badly on them.

There was never anything about the original trilogy's back story that needed that kind of expansion. We just need to know that there were better times, then evil took over and there's also this guy in a halloween costume who is in need of redemption. That's it. Devoting three movies to it is never going to result in awesome....I don't even think ONE movie about it would be particularly remarkable. With comic movies, a lot of the time the origin story is essential storytelling because it is the primary character development moment for that character. With this story, it's really not.

In general, layering trilogy after trilogy about the same character/family set seems like a waste of what is one of the more expansive and constructed universe backdrops in sci-fantasy. The original story was about a disenfranchised kid, a loner who'd lost his way, and an old man who's ability to save the day was past him all being placed by circumstance into positions where they could make a genuine difference. That's what made it engaging, more than lightsabers or big ships or near-jailbait princesses getting tortured by their fathers. And that's why Empire starts things off by kicking them effectively back to square one. Frustrated characters, who are growing and changing as they go, facing off against an enemy that grossly outmatches them.

I have no idea how you do that, now, with the grandparent-aged original cast and their "brought up in comfort" children as your starting point. You'd be better off starting from square one...finding someone new, in this enormous galaxy, who is insignificant and who can be given the chance to grow and to enact change. Someone from a different time in history, if necessary, or with a differently scoped story. But that would be risky, and the slobbering masses want a Boba Fett movie and familiar pictures to stare at, so pretty much just turn the whole thing retarded and watch the idiots squeal with delight I guess.

I get what you are saying, but I think there is a story for the prequels and a good one at that.

EP 1 could be something like there is a battle on Tattooine, Anakin's parents are killed. Obi-Wan is at this battle and senses the force is strong with Anakin. Obi takes Anakin (who is like 18 or something, not a kid), even though his brother, Owen, disapproves. Yoda doesn't want Anakin, but Obi trains him anyway. Along the way the two are called out to Alderan where Anakin meets the Queen. All the while Palpatine is playing a chess match, moving on up through the senate, manipulating many along the way. Things are unsettled and on the verge of war.

EP 2 is straight up Clone Wars, and we see Obi and Anakin fighting side by side and really see these two bond. Especially in the first half of the film. Towards the back half they turn on each other as Anakin is being seduced more and more by Palpatine. The wars end, Anakin pledges his allegiance to Palpatine, sealing his fate as Vader.

EP 3, Palpatine is in full control. We see what an oppressive government does, think 1984. We don't see tons of traffic in the background and people going on about their daily business. No! Shit is fucked up and Anakin is full on twisted and evil (he bangs the Queen prior to this and knocks her up). About half way through we get a fight between Anakin and Obi, where Obi severely and critically beats Anakin leaving him to die. As we all know however, he does not die. We learn that Palpatine is obsessed with cyborgs and turns Anakin into one. The rest of the movie is Vader hunting down and killing Jedi while Yoda and Obi flee.

That's just off the top of my head and a super basic outline, but to me, that has more potential than what Lucas gave us, and could be an interesting story. So I disagree McP...I think there is a story to tell with the prequels, I just think Lucas really fucked them up.

I'd rather that story as a book or book set than a movie. Unless you can work some side story where Senator Amigdala or whatever her name is ends up in the porn industry and does some remarkable, remarkable things.

 I wold love that!

Yeah, heck at this point, I'd love for a writer to come up with alternate prequels, and I can just read them. I never want to watch the films again. I'm sure I will, but damn, they are painful to sit through.
