Yeah, are there (or have there been) any other 'indie bands' that have taken such a corporate approach as Pearl Jam? Or are they carving out a new path?

Pretty much all the indie bands are taking a corporate-friendly approach. Even the so-called DIY scene is playing corporation-sponsored shows in corporation-funded venues, all of which is being promoted by corporation-owned magazines trying to sell you "cool".harmless wrote:Yeah, are there (or have there been) any other 'indie bands' that have taken such a corporate approach as Pearl Jam? Ah, good point. So 'indie' isn't really indie anymore.Heathen wrote:Pretty much all the indie bands are taking a corporate-friendly approach. It's all relative, I guess. The way I see it, it's "indie" inasmuch as the aesthetic decisions they take in regards to the actual recorded music isn't affected by corporate meddling, label notes, or management negotiations in terms of artistic direction, radio play, charts or other deliverables. I'm not talking about the live side of things, like venues and events and whatnot. Pearl Jam is under no obligation to anyone (except maybe Stip) to deliver a radio-friendly brickwalled record, just like Matthew Cooper doesn't have to make his album sound so goddamn loud to conform to an industry standard.

Is there a particular type of mastering that is appropriate for computer speakers or iPod earbuds, or is it similar to radio?

There aren't even particular kinds of ears that are appropriate for that kind of listening, stip.stip wrote:Is there a particular type of mastering that is appropriate for computer speakers or iPod earbuds, or is it similar to radio?

better the occasional faults of an audiophile that lives in a spirit of enthusiasm than the constant bleating of an antediluvian frozen in the ice of its own tasteless existence

I'm pretty sure the Apple brand iPod headphones were made by people who have never listened to music in their life.

Re: Lets Actually Listen to the Album: Binaural
what would the difference be for an ipod earbud listening experience between mastering done for those earbuds and high quality headphones?

Re: Lets Actually Listen to the Album: Binaural
The thing is mastering for ipod/ear buds/laptop speakers etc. is purely a marketing gimmick as is everything else that is supposed to enhance the quality of the source. Usually it's about "enhancing" loudness which means compression, bass and treble by boosting them while the devices in question aren't able to reproduce the full spectrum the recording has and for a while 3D psychoacoustic effects were popular. There's a substantial difference between better audio quality and what is marketed as better (and enhanced) audio quality. The later is often what corporations presume consumers perceive as better sound.

Yeah but... let's say I really want to listen to music in a shitty way, which marketing gimmick would be the most appropriate?
