How fleshed out is the universe, really? There isn't really a strong sense of geography, or even history (beyond something called the clone wars happening a while ago). What there was was one great epic story and a ton of iconic imagery and characters, which you hate when they reuse.

I am talking about the original trilogy, not the books and happy meal toys and everything else. What binds all those disparate things together is their connection to the characters and events and iconography of the original trilogy. The further away you get from that the less the stuff is really Star Wars and just random space adventures. The only thing that would even make it star wars is throwing in a light saber. In that respect, having the new films branch off of the existing characters makes sense.

There's no reason that anything they're doing has to be bad on the face of it. Shitty scripts, acting, and directing can tank this, of course, but it's not DOA in the concept.

I like the idea of the prequels for that reason. You were expanding the star wars universe and history but you had that thread to the core star wars story to make it Star Wars. It was fucked up in its execution in soooooo many ways, but it wasn't a stupid idea on the surface.

You'll never understand the Star Wars universe until you learn to embrace the provocative insight in the Happy Meal toys, stip.

Note to the readers: although it may appear otherwise, the above image is not a screenshot from the upcoming JJ Abrams directed film.

The toys are cool I just think it's bullshit that they left off such a beloved character, especially when he already has his own vehicle.

If I started a Lets Actually Watch series of threads for the Stars Wars movies (say one a week) would people actually participate?

I might.

I'd be way more inclined if I could watch the original versions of the original trilogy. But, yeah, okay, I might do that. But I'm not sure what could be learned at this point. Fine, yes, I'll do it. I'm in.

Goddamn it.

Hope he can find Han again.
