Leatherhead wrote:The notion of "experimental" seems very subjective.
In my first post I gave criteria that would signify an experimental tune:

- non-traditional verse/chorus... song structure
- use of non-traditional guitar/bass/drum instrumentation

Something like "Arc" or "Aye Davanita" or even somthing like "Long Walk" would all qualify.

I personally don't think Help, Help or Bugs are really experimental, but that's just me. If someone really wanted to include them though, I wouldn't really argue.

I dunno, I'd say if I had to put together a list of nominees it'd be Stupid Mop, Arc, Pry, To, Aye Davanita...I'd have no real problem with someone saying Push Me, Pull Me, I'm Open, Happy When I'm Crying, Sleight of Hand, or probably even W.M.A. and No Jeremy.

But we're gonna end up with people saying stuff like Oceans and Dead Man and Strangest Tribe and Long Road and Nothing As It Seems and Got Some and Even Flow and Daughter. I'm pretty sure most of those have already been suggested actually.

Because I think it's an attempt to make something which is not edgy-dark-grunge-alternative but has influences from Latin and Flamenco. PJ never really did that again. Other songs I could nominate are within that 'alternative' ballpark.

It's clear people are interpreting the word very differently. What would you call a proper song that is different for Pearl Jam, yet not filler at all? A Five star Pearl Jam song.

I'd include Bugs only because it's so far outside anything they had done up to that point. It's not experimental in the grand scheme, but it's certainly experimental for Pearl Jam. Especially at the time.

Help Help? Yeah, I'm totally with you there. I don't get what's experimental about it. At all.

I also don't see what's so experimental about Pry, To.

Yeah, I wouldn't argue with someone who didn't want to include that.

I am, I probably think of the word experimental different than you. I can't think of any song that sounds like DTE. It's like Sleight Of Hand, a great but different Pearl Jam song. What's the point of discussing this if it's not about actual songs? Most nominated tracks would never be rated five stars or be played live. They are weird for sure, but hardly great music.

By which you mean, what's the point of discussing this if it's not about typical song formulas?

On Evolution you have the crazy guitar, you have the hallelujahs, the lyrics, Ed's screaming, all of which sets it apart. It's at least as different from BOJ, as SOH is from other Binaural tracks, but filler/weird/unlistenable it is not. It was a leap for Pearl Jam, that is all.

I think that what PJ fans usually tag "filler/weird/unlistenable" is the stuff which is most likely to be experimental.
