Outside of Matt's drumming being unconventional for a Pearl Jam song, Sleight of Hand isn't really very experimental. Moody, yes. Creative, yes. Experimental, no.

Corduroy is obviously the best experimental Pearl Jam song because they had never written a song about a fabric before that, so it was pretty groundbreaking.

But these quotes are exactly why Bugs counts, in my book. It is unconventional and outside of the norm for Pearl Jam, but also, they never fully explored that territory again. I mean, obviously they did spoken word again (though Bugs was the first) but do they have another song driven by an accordion?

It's perhaps the closest they've come to Tom Waits. Though, by Waits' standards the song could hardly be called experimental, by Pearl Jam's standards (especially in 94/95), it absolutely is.

It's clear people are interpreting the word very differently. What would you call a proper song that is different for Pearl Jam, yet not filler at all? A Five star Pearl Jam song.

But yeah, to expand upon that, DTE is a pretty good example of them doing something creative and unique without really breaking down any new ground or abandoning their comfort zone. That's always been their strength (in my eyes, at least). Well, beyond being emotionally engaging, which at the end of the day will always be what I consider to be their greatest strength, and the thing that makes them amazing when they are.
