Just watched 'The Way Way Back' last night. Pretty good flick. If you like the indie quirky dramedy thing, you should like this one.

Just watched 'The Way Way Back' last night. Pretty good flick. If you like the indie quirky dramedy thing, you should like this one.

That was a disappointment for me...though Sam Rockwell was good.

I really liked this one and certainly deserving of its Best Picture nomination. Paul Greengrass is a strong action director but he also knows how to ratchet up the tension even though the outcome is known. Tom Hanks is great; his performance is especially effective in the second half and the last scene is as good of an acting clinic as you will ever see. It's one for his highlight reel. The chief Somali pirate is played by an unknown picked from a casting call but he holds his own quite well. A little surprising he got nominated but Hanks didn't.

Don't know what was more entertaining: the back-and-forth between Dench and the journalist, or the back-and-forth between the 85 and 87 year old ladies sitting next to us, one of whom forgot her earpiece and couldn't hear a damn thing, and the other of whom had to explain the more intricate points of the plot to her, which included letting out a childishly endearing "She's an EVIL nun!" during a key, tension-filled scene that the whole room heard and unashamedly chuckled at.
