I love his little touches on Save You, too. Riot Act will continue to grow on me, I think, for quite some time. There's just so much to take in, from start to finish, and from inside to outside of the sound.harmless wrote:I agree with this completely. I don't mind the lyrics either.
Is Boom underrated? Is he unremarkable? I'm no expert. No one ever talks about him, and he's never recognized as a "member" of Pearl Jam (except at live shows) despite playing with them te last 10+ years. What gives? I love his organ or keyboard or whatever the fuck. Great compliment to the band and their sound on RA.

He's woefully underused, for no reason other than that the band never creates any space for him. Organ requires a degree of aural real estate beyond the amount that something like piano needs, in order to function as a high level addition. Or it can do well as a backing instrument, if it's used to support other instruments playing elaborate or subtly twisting parts. When it's given either of those, it can be just about the best addition to any piece. When it isn't, it just smears colorless decoration across the mix.

I always thought that Counting Crows' use of organ to lay background to the flourishes of guitar was really good, personally.McParadigm wrote:He's woefully underused, for no reason other than that the band never creates any space for him. Re: Lets Actually Listen to the Album: Riot Act
Would you say they've always been like that? I'm asking because i think they weren't in the past and it's the main reason why i'd much rather listen to their earlier music. In My Tree is an example of this for me. The individual parts are very simple but together they create something i find much more interesting and enjoyable to listen to than their recent stuff even if they feature a part than on it's own might be interesting.McParadigm wrote:He's woefully underused, for no reason other than that the band never creates any space for him. He's just a really, really, really fucking sloppy player. Which is fine if he's adding a little bit of background color ("Save You"), but terrible most times.
