looking good zeb. i don't know how you were able to stand in a crowd with 40 degree heat.
I guess I've built up a tolerance. :D

You should take a look at Exposure for some of your stuff, mate.
i'm canadian so 40 degrees C might kill me. 40 below though and i can rock a t-shirt and fight polar bears. i guess i've built a tolerance in the opposite direction.

I really liked the look of Exposure and I actually checked it out after viewing your post but i'm not entirely sure it's for me. I don't often have a verbal story to tell with a lot of my work and for the little i do have to say, the blog section of my site fits my needs. Exposure does look fantastic though. They give something like 3 free albums so i might play around with it. i could see it being a great tool for hosting wedding photos or a larger project.

Give it a go. The layout editor is a dream to work with.

I took a walk around town last weekend during a snowstorm and snapped a few pics. I shot entirely in black and white. I'm also playing around with a new watermark and i'm looking for opinions on it. Good, bad, distracting, indifferent?

as usual, more photos here: http://mjfphoto.ca/blog/2014/2/1/saint-john-in-the-snow

I kinda liked how versatile your previous watermark was, although sometimes it did seem too big. This one seems locked in to the bottom or top.

Those are good captures, MF. Is the middle one above using your fisheye?

I avoid using watermarks entirely as I think they distract from the image. Plus, with the overwhelming amount of photos available online I don't anticipate anyone trying to knock off my work.

I don't find it distracting, but I do find it slightly annoying that the title (or whatever you'd call it) of the photo is between citation marks.

fair enough. consistency is actually what i was aiming for. it was starting to bug me having the logo in random corners. plus i had 3 different ones for different kinds of contrast but the opaque black bar works against everything. and you're right, i was definitely having a hard time keeping that consistent with 2 cameras at 2 different resolutions - even as an action script.

yup on the fisheye. i love that thing.

my reason for using watermarks is that a big part of my business comes from referrals and social media. with the way facebook handles things (and how it changes regularly) I want to have something permanent to refer people back to me. i'm not terribly concerned about theft either. if someone really wanted to rip me off a small watermark isn't going to stop them anyways.

i wasn't sure about the quotes or not but you may be right. this was just a test run to see how it would look. in most cases i probably wouldn't even use the titles

anyways thanks for the input folks, i appreciate it. and feel free to rip apart my work too...just because i work semi-professionally doesn't mean i don't still have a TON to learn ;)

This is cool. I have a photo journalism project that I'm gonna tackle this summer on the crappy working and living conditions at AZ dairy plants. If my old newspaper doesn't publish it, I may use this site.

That's the only legit reason to use one. :nice:

This is one of your best, Mike. Although if it were me the snowflake in front of the subject's right eye would drive me crazy.

thanks zebron. that snowflake actually kinda bugs me too. i took that a few years ago and loaded it to my site without any edits whatsoever. there are a lot of images I want to go back and fix given the years of experience i've had since they were originally shot - but then laziness gets the better of me. though i've thinking it might be a good idea to clean house sometime in the near future. i want to keep my portfolio relatively lean and just keep the best stuff there.

Excellent shots  . hard to pick a favourite but the 2nd one of the auditorium is great, as is the shot of the hallway above it. that whole building is fantastic, so many great lines!

Thanks mate. I love the lines of that building. I can see myself looking for more opportunities for photography around campus.

I spent 3 days last week shooting an IT conference and I rented a beautiful lens for the occasion. A Nikkor 24-70 2.8f. If I ever have an extra 2 grand burning a hole in my pocket this lens will be the first thing I buy.

The full flickr set is here

Somebody suggested I post in this thread since I haven't shared any of my photos here. I guess I'll start with some concert shots. I shot these using a small Fuji Finepix back in the days before everyone had camera phones. I don't take the camera to concerts much these days because everyone has their phone up, and I'm kind of tired of it. I like some of these though:

Same here. It's gotten pretty annoying and i'd rather just enjoy the show and not worry about my camera getting damaged or even turned away at the door by security because of it. So i just say fuck it, there's a million camera phones and every band seems to post show photos on social media anyways and they've got far better access than I could get. I do still sometimes take my gear out to local shows though.

Some cool shots BTW. my first slr was a fuji finepix. it was a nice little camera.
