aren't a lot of the riot act takes one or two shots. I wonder if that's more a function of how Eddie sings in the early stages of the song.
It's a nice song Harmless. It's just not a grabber. It's either an unfinished idea, or an idea a bit too simple to justify a release. The shit that annoys you about FD won't be in it, despite the sentiment.

Finally heard this. Other than the double vocals (at points), I enjoyed it. It's Sappy Ed sapping it up in the sappiest way sappable.
At this point, I'm just happy to get get anything new (in the sense that it's a song that's never been released). It's no Cold Confession, but it'll do.

This song could be cleaned up a la Drifting-lost-dogs-version and it could be very solid.

Not bad. It sounds less forced than a lot of similar material, less try hard, less "statement"-y. I like the understated quality and the double vocals are cool. Not great by any means, but more satisfying in many regards than similar material from the last two albums.

You shame the memory of Dead Man, my friend. It's more like if Ed had written Thumbing My Way back when he was in Wings.
Although there was a moment somewhere between 2 and 2:30 where the vocals went off from each other, and for one glorious moment it sounded like a mob of disoriented, mumbling Eddie Vedders. That was easily the highlight.

Re: EV's "Coming Home To You" ?
This is quite a nice song.
It's obviously a demo, the vocals are too low in the mix (although I'd rather that than too high). But I love that the vocals are mumbly and old-style. Are we sure this isn't a Riot Act take?
It's not overly twee because some of the chords add a melancholy to it; a problem with many of the new songs is that Ed doesn't dirty them up in any whatsoever, they're too 'pretty'.
I like the organ (yes OK go and take me out of context). The piano, however, almost ruins it. Every time they use a piano these days they tip a song over into church-music territory.

Use of the organ, harmonica and keyboard, along with the recording quality, suggest this was written and recorded around the time of Santa Cruz.
I don't think this is just a solo song.

Re: EV's "Coming Home To You" ?
The fact that it's labeled as 'uke demos' leads to believe it may have been a part of that group of recordings that included the original Longing to Belong, the demo that eventually became Without You, and all those other uke songs, which would make it early 2002, prior to Riot Act. Just speculative, but it sounds right out of that group vocally.harmless wrote:This is quite a nice song.
