Re: Where The Streets Have No Name / The U2 Thread
I'm going to say the opposite; I am loving this stuff. I made a 4CD set of studio takes that I am plowing through; once I've digested that I'm going to make a disc of the remixes and another disc of the live tracks. I tend to like the stuff that mirrors the era of albums I like (the 1991-1997 stuff) best, but after two listens this set is a great "alternate history" of sorts. I don't have Lament's expertise but if I were to pick five of these on first listen I would pick (trying to factor in all eras):
Be There
Wave of Sorrow (Birdland)
Salome
North And South of the River
Fast Cars

I don't know that i know those. I don't remember them, at any rate.
Oh, I do like Fast Cars. I wonder why that didn't make it onto Atomic Bomb.

Stip, all of KD's picks there are excellent, especially if you're trying to cover several eras.
I'd toss in I'm Not Your Baby just as a personal favorite, as well as Slow Dancing and Touch.

I have just about everything by U2 but am not familiar with I'm Not Your Baby. Where is it from and what era?Lament wrote:Stip, all of KD's picks there are excellent, especially if you're trying to cover several eras.

Think I’m going to try being kind to everyone a chance.

Pop-era, it's on the soundtrack from The End of Violence. It's got Sinead O'Connor on it as well. An instrumental remix of it also showed up on CD1 of the Please single in the UK (called The Skysplitter Dub).

I'm sure I'm alone in this, but I was pleasantly surprised by the new single, Invisible. Granted, my expectations were pretty low, but I'm enjoying it so far. Nothing earth shattering, but I like it.

Entirely forgettable. And unforgivable. They should really be hitting heavy if this is the opening salvo of a comeback. This is beyond weak.

I just saw the commercial, which was underwhelming, but it's not like I'm not gonna get the album. And it was only 20 seconds

Hunted around on YouTube to find a snippit of this song. Don't think it's enought to get me listening to them again

I played it a few times when I downloaded it and then listened to it once on my run. I'm enjoying it.

I liked the extended bridge okay, but I think this was easily the weakest lead single U2 has ever put out. Get On Your Boots had some exciting hooks to carry you through a weaker song. But this was pretty disappointing. It's only one song, so we'll see...

It's not a lead single, it's just a "sneak peek" from the new album. It's also soooo booooooooringstip wrote:I liked the extended bridge okay, but I think this was easily the weakest lead single U2 has ever put out. Re: Where The Streets Have No Name / The U2 Thread
Aren't they kind of famous for leading with their best punch?
They certainly didn't on the last one. Hopefully not this time either.
It does say Super Bowl version or red version
Perhaps it's just a different mix?

Re: Where The Streets Have No Name / The U2 Thread
This isn't supposed to be their best punch though. And I don't think they're famous for leading with their "best" punch as much as they are with a "bold" punch (especially with Desire, The Fly, Numb, and Discotheque, which were pretty daring considering those albums could have been launched with much safer choices like All I Want Is You, One, Stay, and Staring at the Sun). A Day Without Me and Fire were hardly great punches (so much so that 99% of people don't even realize those were lead singles). Beautiful Day and Vertigo were pretty safe punches, while Get on Your Boots was a bit less safe. New Year's Day, Pride, With or Without You were all pretty obvious choices though. It's still very plausible the first single off of this album may be something bold.
As a sneak peek (which, all we know is that it's from the album sessions, it's not even officially on the album), it's taken my anticipation for the new album from passive to active. I'm feeling eager now about the fact that there's a new U2 album coming out this year, so the song is doing the trick for me.
