Sly & The Family Stone

Other than Pearl Jam, who else is there?

I used to think that this type of music was stupid when I was a kid then I grew the funk up.

The funk is definitely toned down on it, in large part because Larry Graham (their bassist, and the dude who invented the slap technique) wasn't in the band any more.
harmless wrote:'Jane is a Groupee' is just a great song whichever way you want to swing it. Quite Rocky. Beatles / Kinks influence?
I really like the guitar work on that one.
harmless wrote:The album Life seems like a really nice fusion of sounds; there's funk, soul, Motown and 50's Rock and Roll / doo-wop, to my ear. Nice.
It's a super, super underrated album. It didn't fare very well commercially so that probably has a lot to do with it, but pretty much everything great about the band is in full-force on that record. I'd actually call it my third favorite Sly album, ahead of Fresh.
harmless wrote:"If This Room Could Talk" and "Run, Run, Run" seem pretty innovative to me, rhythm-wise. The latter could almost be contemporary Indie rock.
I'd never looked at "Run, Run, Run" like that, but you're pretty spot on. I think A Whole New Thing is a pretty remarkable debut, but it kinda fell through the cracks until Dance to the Music became a hit.

I love how the verses in that almost feel like they're both fast and slow at the same time, if that makes sense.
It makes sense it's all about one groove syncopating over another.

I'm listening to The Temptations collection now. "Get Ready" was one of the songs I've always recognised as unmistakeably Motown. I love it.

Get Ready is awesome, but Ain't Too Proud to Beg is just...few things in life are better than Ain't Too Proud to Beg.

I agree, I was going to mention that one too.

In the few years I was doing the 50's/60's/70's night, the only songs I literally played every single week were Ain't Too Proud to Beg, You Can't Hurry Love, and I Want You Back.

In searching for You Can't Hurry Love on Youtube, I've just found a gay Bollywood movie called You Can't Curry Love. Sounds pretty special!

Wow.

I can't decide if I absolutely need to see that or want nothing more than to not see that.

Sister Act did a good job of making "Ball of Confusion" sound less kickass.

Thankfully I have no recollection of Ball of Confusion being in that movie. Or that movie for the most part.

Any correlation between my post about a gay Bollywood movie and one referencing "Ball of Confusion" is coincidental.

I thought you were trying to suggest we make a gay Bollywood movie called Balls of Confusion.

I'm hard pressed to think of a better opening to a song in the history of popular music than that "I knowwww..."

Lament, you know there's a new Prince album with his new band 3rd Eye Girl due soon? Just saw someone FB about it.

Yeah. Well, there's a 3rd Eye Girl album coming out. The press release seem to make a point to not be clear about whether or not Prince would actually be on it. It would actually be just like him to not actually appear on the record.

I mean, I think he will, but I don't want to get my hopes up too much. I'm intrigued though (assuming he's on it), as it's been almost four years since his last album, and he's never gone that long without putting a record out in his entire thirty-five year career.

I have a file of bonus tracks from the reissues they put out a few years ago that I'll try to upload today. It's pretty inconsequential stuff, but some of it is worth hearing at least once.

He was, shockingly on the sitcom that came on after the super bowl last night, and im pretty sure I spotted some of the 3rd Eye Girls in the crowd around him???

Prince on a sitcom just seemed so... Sly Stone out there?
and to tie that all together,

Slys bass player and the female trumpet player, were the opening act the first time I saw Prince live many many many years ago.
