The stuff you're listening to it pretty much the era when funk grew out of soul, and a lot of it ended up on the Motown label, so there's a ton of crossover. Sly and Curtis Mayfield I'd both say progressed from soul to funk (Sly actually kinda invented funk). The Temptations went from a very traditional Motown sound to funk. Stevie Wonder went from a traditional Motown sound to a blend of soul and funk. Marvin Gaye went from Motown to soul. Not that there wasn't a lot of soul in the Motown sound, but the Motown sound was a very unique and recognizable pop sound/approach. I apologize cause probably none of this makes sense anywhere outside of my head...harmless wrote:Does it just become instinctive, telling which one you're listening to? They call her the Queen of Soul. She's unreal.harmless wrote:What has Aretha Franklin got to do with everything? She'd be described as "Soul", right?
I second Jorge's list.theplatypus wrote:Martha & The Vandellas (you probably know "Heatwave"), Mary Wells, Gladys Knight & The Pips, The Marvelettes.
That's a fantastic choice. What a beautiful song.theplatypus wrote:"Never Can Say Goodbye" for me.
Yeah, he had some serious demons. I always wondered if subconsciously that was part of why I never got anywhere near as into him as I did with Sly or Stevie Wonder.harmless wrote:Speaking of women, I didn't like reading today that Marvin Gaye was a violent misogynist. That he was shot by his father dragged me into his biography, and now I'm wishing What's Going On wasn't such a fantastic album.

Re: Stevie Wonder
There is so much great material on there.
Papa Was A Rollin' Stone manages to be twelve minutes long and somehow still not seem long enough.
Can't Get Next to You brings back so many memories of being in my parents' minivan when I was a kid. They had a 4 cassette set of those Billboard Top Ten hits compilations, 1967-1970. I fell in love with a lot of artists from those tapes. Can't Get Next to You was a song I never got sick of hearing (and believe me, I probably heard it a thousand times, cause those tapes got played to DEATH).

Should we have a separate thread now that we're branching out so we can keep this one Steve Wonder-fied?

That's pretty sensible.theplatypus wrote:Yeah, I propose a separate Motown & Stax thread
If harmless gets into Sly enough I'm gonna start a Sly thread. I've wanted to for a while, but always figured it'd just be me posting in it.

I can't remember, but I think that was "Knocks Me Off My Feet" or "Ordinary Pain". I love those now but they crept up more slowly.

In a catalog packed to the brim with great songs, Living For the City is definitely a part of the uppermost echelon.
