I've got a story. I was the BU Barnes and Noble the week before Christmas (this is across the street from Fenway, basically, if you've never been there) and the author of that book was doing a signing; they just had a small table set up near the register with one copy of his book standing up on it. But everybody in the store was there doing holiday shopping, and we saw no fewer than three people walk up to him and ask him where something was in the store and each time he reacted by frustratingly seething between his teeth: "I'm an author." I felt bad for the guy but also it was a good laugh.

Being a relatively unknown author at your own book signing has to be just as torturous as being a door to door salesman. Oh, the humility.
