This post i can agree with but your prior one and many otherrs that post blaming it on ed...or this "power struggle" where apparently now stone doesnt bring anything good to the band because its eds band....
guys, why do people overlook things such as this:
The band is making the music they want to make. They are int he moment and putting out what they are into. This might change tomorrow and it may have been different yesterday. But c'mon...just cause you dont like the recent stuff (i admit its not up to their prime work) doesn't mean this is all ed and if stone had more control we would get to enjoy mesmerizing transcendant work
That was such a awesome show. That was mostly pre internet and when Vedder called for a drummer in the audience.... my best buddy took off like a bat out of hell to the front of the stage...
No dice.
Good times. Damn those shows with C Average were pretty exciting.
Its also hilarious that people continue to hammer on this ed/stone power struggle and blame the so called demise of the band on the fact hat stone has given up control to ed...
even though....Vitalogy and No code are continually rated as some of the better works of the band...
Where in pj20 - it is admitted that this was the the time Ed took over as the leader...

All of this is "true" but too simplistic. I think that over time, the band would have benefited from Stone being a little more "in your face" and functioning as more of a true check to Ed.
This doesn't mean I think they suck or Ed is a problem. I'm merely saying that creative conflict would bring their recent output from 'very good' to 'great.'

I don't think so. People who are still happy with the music probably tend to feel like this. People who aren't start to look for the place where, in their mind, it all went wrong.
They can do whatever they want as far as the music. I like their songs 90% of the time. The only thing that really bothers me is the amount of time between albums. A band with five songwriters shouldn't have any problem coming up with 2 or 3 songs every year and a half. It's not like they don't have a guy in the band with his own studio. They have nothing to do all day long but write songs.
LetMeSleep wrote:Also while I'm on this time of the band, are there any quotations from Jeff, Stone and Mike regarding the I got Shit/Long Road ep and the lack of actual PJ members performing the songs (okay Jeff played on LRd). It has always struck me as the moment of power shift from Stone to Ed (well the public moment).
same sessions as "mirror ball" right? i think they talk about it a little bit in the pj20 movie

By your math, they should come out with an album every 6-9 years, assuming a 12-song album, right? It seems they exceeded your expectations then.
Ten (1991)
Vs. (1993)
Vitalogy (1994)
No Code (1996)
Yield (1998)
Binaural (2000)
Riot Act (2002)
Pearl Jam (2006)
Backspacer (2009)
In my opinion, not buying/signing/run the Loosegroove project or not founding something like that was a mistake. If pearl jam ever wanted to be a different kind of band, not only as a part of the 90's idealism but as an active, continuous, substantial factor in music even politics ,they could have been independent and "help" new bands the time they could afford it and when it was meaningful.
I have about ten more but is just the 1st of the month

I agree. It's one thing to not like their current output but to completely blame their current music entirely on the shoulders of one particular member seems silly.

I thought it was pretty awesome.
Also I definitely feel the push for more $$ and more pop relevance after Riot Act is their biggest mistake. This band made a shit-ton of mistakes from Ten through Binaural but it never kept the records from being amazing.

i think he was meaning 2 or 3 songs from each member every year and a half which would be 10 to 15 songs for a new album

I thought it was terrible.
I was genuinely pretty okay with everything Pearl Jam up to and including everything in 2006. Though Riot Act and S/T were a step down in consistency from their best work, each record still had a handful of good-to-great songs and the live shows remained outstanding. It's really only been since 2007 that I've changed that opinion; to be honest, it's hard thinking of things they've done since then that I don't have some issue with.
I don't think I'm the only who feels as though they've become an entirely different band in the last five years or so.
