Thumbing My Way has some of that overpicking too.

It's definitely got better lyrics than the slower songs that followed. But I certainly prefer Just Breathe, The End, and Sleeping by Myself to Thumbing My Way. Shit, I probably like Future Days more too, but that song is pretty bound up with some personal stuff it is hard to separate it out from.

I like most of the vocal flourishes in these newer songs

The main rhythm in Thumbing my way is primarily strummed, nothing like Just Breathe or Guaranteed for example. I think Man of the Hour is probably the most ideal picking style that Ed has done for my tastes (Somewhat in the vein of Better Man verses).
It's all a matter of taste.

The Chop Suey version of TMW is probably my favorite thing to come out of RA apart from Help, Help.

He shares credits with other people on that album. He shared credits with other at times in the Minutemen. It sounds exactly like the kinds of songs he's been writing for his entire career, and nothing like anything Ed has written before or since then.

So yeah, it's obviously a pretty safe assumption that Ed had something to do with writing it.

I've been running through my "bsides and misc" PJ folder this week and I'm constantly reminded of how good even the throw-away tracks are from this band. And it's not just talking about the obvious stuff like Sad or Breath, I'm talking about things like Black Red Yellow or Happy when I'm Crying. Imagine finding this band today and all the beautiful and weird stuff you'd have to explore.

Some recordings I fell in love with all over again...

Footsteps (original version) - such a powerful vocal performance gets muddied by the added harmonica on LD.
Drifting (LD version) - the flipside of what I said about Footsteps, this one got better when Eddie went to the higher octave on Lost Dogs.
Crazy Mary - I've become a bit desensitized to the long-winded live renditions and forgot how honest Ed's vocal was on the original recording.
Poor Girl and Devil Doll (Ed with Supersuckers) - These are two of my favorite Ed-collaboration tracks, right up there with Ed/Zeke doing I Believe in Miracles.

I had a Whale Song epiphany recently. That tune is way overlooked. For obvious reasons. But it deserves better

I'm sure you are right. I think we all knew that when said he liked the Ed song Against The 70's what he meant. Busting balls over that is goofy. The who wrote what thing was just me getting sidetracked. I know nothing about Mike Watt.

I have it on vinyl! I think it's blue. I listened to it once or twice when it came out. It's at my moms house.
