This was the first Pearl Jam album I was a fan for. I loved what I had heard previously but I hadn't been a 'fan' while any other new album was released.
Therefore, I will probably always hold this album in higher regard than it may deserve, but I do think it's a solid album. 'Unthought Known' and 'The End' are two of my favourite Pearl Jam tracks.

I think it's great. Backspacer is not a favorite around these parts (certainly not for me) but I'm curious to get the perspective of someone who became a fan of the band with that album. What do you think of the other stuff?

No no you misunderstand. Sorry I mustn't have been clear.

I was a fan of the band but 'Backspacer' was the first album I experienced as a fan. Previous albums were released when I didn't know much of Pearl Jam so 'Backspacer' was the first album I could look forward to, in a sense.

But yeah I think it's a good album. 'Supersonic', 'Gonna See My Friend' and 'Force Of Nature' are pretty weak tracks but I think 'Just Breathe', 'Unthought Known' and 'The End' are all great efforts. I quite enjoy 'Got Some' and 'Johnny Guitar', too.

The backlash against the Fixer really marks the point where RM lost its way. That's such a good song.

Great Songs
Force of Nature
Gonna See My Friend
The Fixer

Very Good
Got Some
Amongst the Waves
Johnny Guitar
The End
Just Breathe

Decent
Unthought Known
Speed of Sound

No Thank You
Supersonic

The first half of this album is so good. The second half has Force of Nature, one of pearl jam's best anthems once you get past the unfortunate intro with the wheezy guitar., but it's inconsistent overall.
