The Bruce side of him is the only side of him now.

I don't have a problem with Bruce as an inspiration but I don't think it's produced their best work. I do like some of the u2 influences that have crept into their work.

i gave this a break the last few weeks, but listened to it again today. it still holds up as good as it did when i first heard it. 'pendulum' is still the best thing they've done in years, sirens is still terrible. it has a kinda relaxed confidence to it. the first 3 are still the usual up tempo songs that start a pearl jam record, but eddie vedder isnt screaming like he's trying to sound like he did on vs. i think i actually might like the 2nd half of the album more. 'swallowed whole' sounds as much as an eddie vedder song changed into a pearl jam song as 'sleeping by myself' does, and i like SW a lot more. its got a couple duds (sirens, future days), but its been a while and i still think this is their strongest album in over a decade.

LB is still PJ's weakest album to date but there's still 5 or 6 pretty good tracks on there.

And to the "Sirens" haters: Is it really that far off from "Betterman" or "Black" in terms of earnestness and sentiment? Not really. Those songs are just classics so they get a free pass. A PJ noob would find Sirens no different from those tunes.

Sure, there's a difference, but I do still think Sirens could be described as Black 2013.

I think the black comparison is fair. Betterman feels totally different

Sirens feels really close to Black. Specially production wise.

I love both.

Yep. This is still the same band that made Ten. The message board types (I'm generalizing here) seem to like the "weird" side of PJ, but a song like Sirens is very much in line with who PJ has been since day 1. I believe the fans of the "weird" PJ would hate Ten if they went back in time and would only like Oceans and Master/Slave and would be pining for that to be their whole career. In fact, during the Ten days, there was a huge contingent of music snobs that thought this exact thing. That Ten was just generic rock. I think PJ has just become comfortable with who they are, and they don't have this yearning to prove that they have this so-called idiosyncratic 'interesting' experimental side to them. They just want to make whatever comes out of them without being self-consious about it.

Even Kurt Cobain called Ten cock rock.

And i feel like PJ has more than indulged in the Oceans/Master Slave side of them. That's what Vitalogy/No Code/Binaural aka the 'cool mid-period' people around these parts jizz themselves over (again, I'm generalizing please don't revolt against me here). They gave us all that and they might just want to put some balance back and make things a little "generic" again, if that makes any sense. My hope is that one day late career they can really combine the 2 sides into something really cool.

This would be fantastic. It's becoming more and more unlikely but who knows?

Would take the right producer to do that.
