I would say its his last great album, and one of the most accessible one, specially for starters.
I can see how it would be a good, accessible album for people who are coming to his work at what might seem like a dauntingly late point in his career. I guess as someone who never stopped paying attention to him it was just a letdown after The Rainbow Children (which for me is far and away his best post-1995 work), and N.E.W.S. (which hinted towards a lot of exciting things that didn't start to manifest until Planet Earth and MPLSound, and to be fair didn't end up being as exciting as a lot of us had hoped). It has some decent songs on it, but in terms of his late career attempts to make more accessible music, I prefer Rave over it (even though Rave in retrospect was a false start, and Musicology obviously accomplished what he wanted it to).
I need to listen to Rave again...at the time it felt like..mmm too much, i dont know...I will listen to it again.
The good thing with Prince is that i might hate an album that eventually love. Its weird, but it happens with him all the time.

Rave is definitely a very flawed, very patchy album, but it has some good moments on it. Wherever U Go, Whatever U Do is beautiful and one of my favorites in his catalog. So Far, So Pleased and Baby Knows can be fun in the right moment. The Greatest Romance Ever Sold is a solid ballad (I enjoy the pre-chorus, the "This is where we end..." part). Man 'O' War and Eye Love U, But Eye Don't Trust U Anymore are pretty starkly vulnerable moments, and in the right mood can be fairly powerful.

You're definitely right on the second point. In the last year Controversy went from being an album I spent like fifteen considering to be the weakest link of his 1980-1988 run, and now it's the album I've been playing the most by him lately. Come is another album that all of the sudden hit me out of nowhere.

Well yeah, i had the same feeling with Musicology too..right now, i love it..the first run of 6 or 7 songs are awesome and i remember back in the day not feeling it the same way.
Maybe thats why he is such a timeless artist.

If you let me know what the other one is, I will clear up some room in my dropbox and put some more up there for you (if you'd like).

Tread lightly, for His Royal Badness is as litigious as he is short.

I can't find it and I can't remember what it was called either, so it's probably safe to say I never received it. What I did find though is that spoken word album by Manic Street Preachers. There was a WTF moment before I realised what it was, and so I'll have to go back in that full knowledge.

Oh yeah, the Patrick Jones one.

The music is far better than the poetry on that, but it still makes for an interesting listen.

I have Purple Rain and 1999 and like them quite a bit. What should I look into getting next?

agree. I saw him in 1985 (I think) at the Carrier Dome (Syracuse University) - dude blew the fucking roof off. one of the few concerts where I left in awe of the performer.
Me too! Purple Rain tour at the Tacoma Dome. It was my first concert without parental supervision and the show was awesome.

I think it was 1999 I had, but I can't find it on my system. I possibly even had Sign O' The Times.
