Fire! Orchestra – Second Exit (Rune Grammofon)
Fire! Orchestra is a 24 member avant-garde, free jazz group that emerged from the Scandinavian jazz scene. Already popping up in Album of the Year lists in The Wire, Mojo, Jazzwise and The Quietus, their first album Exit! was a success when it was released back in January 2013, getting great reviews everywhere and leading to a number of very popular live shows.
One of these you will find on Second Exit, albeit a slightly scaled down version of the full 30 member orchestra, but still sporting 13 members including new boy Goran Kajfes on cornet and previous Fire! collaborator Oren Ambarchi on guitar. The album was recorded live in concert at the Festival Les Rendez-vous de L´erdre in Nantes.

Owen Pallett Announces 'In Conflict' Album, Works with Brian Eno

Image

As hinted last year, accomplished violinist and solo artist Owen Pallet has been plotting a new album for quite a while. Now, details for the record have emerged.

The new album marks Pallett's first solo album since the 2010 effort Heartland. Called In Conflict, it includes 13 new compositions from the artist.

Recorded at Montreal's Hotel2Tango and Sonovox Studios with Mark Lawson, it features the core rhythm section of Robbie Gordon and Matt Smith, as well as features guest contributions from Brian Eno and the Czech FILMharmonic Orchestra, among others.

"The record is meant to approach 'insanity' in a positive way," Pallett said in a statement. "Depression, addiction, gender trouble, and the creative state are presented as positive, loveable, empathetic ways of being. Not preferable, per se, but all as equal, valid positions that we experience, which make us human."

In Conflict will be available on May 13 via Domino/Secret City. A trailer for the album can be viewed below, while the album art is posted above.

I don't really understand trailers for albums, but that one was pretty well done. It gives you a good idea of what the record's going to sound like. I've never really listened to Owen Pallett outside of a few songs, and I don't think that sample will convince me to dig any further.

Anyway, here's something else:

Mike Vennart (ex-frontman for Oceansize and one half of British Theatre) - "Operate"

Not the best thing he's done, but it is the first music he's released under his own name and will hopefully indicate more stuff to come. Indie Rock, with a bit of pop in places and some harder-edged stuff as the song goes on.

Last year I saw something silly like a trailer for a trailer IIRC.

Yeah, definitely hope so. He's touring with Biffy Clyro for a while, again, though, so I'm not expecting much.

I found something else coming this year that sounds interesting, too.

Ryan Driver Quintet - "Birds in Spring" from the album Plays the Stephen Parkinson Songbook

A sort of slightly mutated lounge-jazz. They typically play early-mid 20th Century standards, but this one is made of songs that Stephen Parkinson composed solely for them.

I've spent a lot of time alluding to this record's existence so it is with great joy and nervousness that I present the title, tracklisting and artwork for the second full-length Musk Ox album...

Woodfall

Part 1 - Earthrise (9:24)
Part 2 ...- Windswept (10:44)
Part 3 - Arcanum (17:35)
Part 4 - Above the Clouds (10:28)
Part 5 - Serenade the Constellations (17:46)

The album is a 65min epic for classical guitar, cello and violin. It's been a long time coming and I thank you all for your patience and support. Myself, Raph and Evan worked extremely hard on this recording and are excited to have you hear it. An official release date will be announced in the new year.
This has my interest for sure!

I know this was getting a little hyped earlier in the thread when we had a short sample; surprised to see no one's posted the whole thing, yet.
Inventions (Matthew Coooper [aka Eluvium] and Mark T. Smith [Explosions in the Sky]) - "Entity" from their self-titled debut

Ethereal ambient music, nothing unexpected here. There's bits of the "vocal" synthesizer effects used here; think that Oneohtrix Point Never record from last year, for an example, but this is more dense and floaty. Absurdly pretty.

Avey Tare's Slasher Flicks - "Little Fang" from the debut LP, Enter the Slasher House

Psych-pop, I guess. It's being compared to Ariel Pink; not familiar enough with him to know. Pretty catchy with all the hallmark Avey Tare vocals; pitch-shifting, chorus effects, etc.

A Winged Victory for the Sullen - "ATOMOS VII" from the EP of the same name (April) and also on the new LP, ATOMOS out later this year

Minimal, neo-classical, ambient, drone; if you know these guys or their related works, you know the drill.

I haven'y seen Greg? Laswell mentioned before. From his album that just came out yesterday, I Was Going To Be An Astronaut.

Think I’m going to try being kind to everyone a chance.

Sarah Neufeld just put out this wonderful little EP as a companion piece to last year's Hero Brother. It's called Black Ground E.P.. First song is an orchestral reworking of "Breathing Black Ground" with arrangements by Owen Pallett. The other two songs are b-sides from the album session.
