I think that what many if not the majority here most stubbornly argue makes a great song and is strong song writing isn't even mirrored in their own taste let alone works as a general rule.

i think it is meant to mean: I have constructed a stereotype of what the position of the majority of this board is, as though they were a homogenous and unified entity; and i have not shared the definition of that construct with the board-entity, but i have applied it to you (personally) as though it is a position that you have offered and defended, and I am now successfully refuting that argument, that you have not made, nor defended, but which I have constructed, and not defined, in order to justify my perception that you (personally, and as a member of the board-entity) are a hypocrite, and I am not.

but I am not certain. and for some reason, i have an urge to sword fight imaginary storm troopers in my basement and air make-out with princess Leia on top of the dryer.

It's interesting how a song that doesn't have any of what most people here consider interesting song writing properties is rated 5 stars by 42 out of 45 people.
Not much of a decent riff, rather average music and melody, standard structure, a solo that for the most part follows the verse melody, very common time signature and yet....

Everything is done well. Everything is balanced. Every part is performed honestly. Nothing is too simple or is trying too hard.


The song is just perfect.

This is why i tend to dismiss most of the input people have about the songwriting of this band. This is a song credited to Ed alone from an album described by Jeff as "uhm Ed just kinda uhm telling us what to play" while Stone nodes and yet he's the least talented person in the band. It's also why i find the notion of a band spending more time together on a song as a recipe for really good music naive. When songwriting is "mechanical" and forced it never produces truly great songs. Different people have different tastes and skills which influences the music they write and arrange. This band isn't exempt from this. This song is the antithesis of the way Stone and Jeff (and Mike) write and neither of them ever achieved this level of songwriting and probably don't find it particularly good either.

I have not yet listened carefully.

My verdict is forthcoming.

Very strong rendition. Certainly one of the best I've heard. Hard to find much fault other than maybe Ed's sometimes wavering voice. Very good intro/outro. Solo is pretty outstanding, too, but I think what sets this one apart is the strength of Matt's playing and Stone's work.

Best ever? Eh.... not really. What it lacks is the emotion necessary for "best ever". Very tight, though, and better than most, if not all, versions of this over the last ten years I'd bet.
