If you look at the loudness wars website, it certainly appears that there was different mastering done:
http://www.dr.loudness-war.info/index.p ... order=desc
Note the generally better scores for vinyl releases.

Yeah McParadigm linked to that a while back. I'm curious of their methods when it comes to getting the vinyl data.aurynsdad wrote:If you look at the loudness wars website, it certainly appears that there was different mastering done:

As far as i know from "homemade" rips. The website is a collection of user uploaded data obtained with the foobar plugin.cutuphalfdead wrote:Yeah McParadigm linked to that a while back. No Code and Yield sound incredible as well as Lightning Bolt.
Backspacer certainly sounds the worst out of the ones I have. Vs and Vitalogy both sound great on vinyl.
From what I have:
No Code
Vitalogy
Vs
LB
Backspacer

Re: Vinyl spinners: Rank PJ albums on vinyl
I haven't tested my PJ LP's across multiple speaker setups to really have a strong opinion. However, I don't find any of them to be greatly improved just by their vinyl pressing. S/T maybe, but I've now heard so many masters of that album that I don't know what to think anymore.
Backspacer is noticeably worse. But overall, I am happy with all the pressings of the albums up to S/T. I've probably played my Riot Act and Yield LPs the most.
I've gone off vinyl a bit in the last few years because its too hard to keep up when I'm discovering new albums every week. My collection was getting too big and hard to manage and I still look at them all and have trouble finding something I want to play. I've found just subtlety adjusting the EQ on iTunes etc. is better to get an album sounding good to your ears, rather than the format.
I used to get fooled by the Dynamic range DB. Even though the vinyl rips usually show a better DR average. The variance between the min and max are the same so the master is not really more dynamic, its just a lower volume. Of course, sometimes you can pick up a great vinyl pressing that is superior to digital.
I probably wont be picking up gigaton on LP which is a bit sad, but who knows.

I'm definitely not a completist, I've missed probably all of the rare/limited releases (RSD, Xmas, etc).
Yet I can't see me missing out on a full album in vinyl.

Trust me, folks. I've transferred all of the PJ albums up to Backspacer from the original vinyl and they all pretty much match the digtal versions, and any differences in dynamics are down to the vinyl transfer process. Anybody who thinks they are getting a "better" master is fooling themselves. The damage was already done before it reached the vinyl mastering stage.

this is the real answer. not because i know have proof, but if we are to trust anyone about this, it's WCT. PJ on vinyl is just a romantic novel.Wendy Carlos's Twin wrote:Trust me, folks. I’ve finally got all the Pearl Jam albums on vinyl now. Just waiting for a pre-ordered Gigaton, to complete the collection.
