Rust is already one of my tv characters, ever.

Also, this one's free, you don't even need to quote me: someone go write a blog post/academic paper on Marty's ass fetish!

And Marty has a lot to answer for. A lot of penance. I don't see his end being too good. Maybe something happens to one of his daughters.

The young ex pros is a setup being paid for by the sinister minister.

Starting to think Woody had major writing influence when deciding how often to portray Marty's character flaw. Oh, and veto power on the quality of T&A.

Although the last episode was a dip in overall quality, it felt more like a very good episode of CSI vs. the previous TDs, I agree. I know everyone loves Spacey on House of Cards but MM has been nothing short of a revelation as this character and I see this show as HBO saying "fuck you, we've still got it" to AMC, Netflix, and Showtime.

Please don't ever compare TD to CSI again. The worst episode of TD would still be miles ahead of the best episode of CSI.broken iris wrote:psychobain wrote: i cant see him losing the emmy/golden globe next year

Don't rule out Woody. They'll both be nominated in the same category and Woody seems to be giving the most range with his emotions. But something tells me those Emmy voters swoon over Spacey.

*Sorry. I've never actually seen CSI, I just couldn't think of another "crime investigator" show.tommymctom wrote:Please don't ever compare TD to CSI again. Re: HBO Television Show: True Detective
I think so too, either that or Martys got some kinda magic dick. The minister also hinted that he knew rust had/has an alcohol problem....Or was it just me that thought that?makeshift wrote:The young ex pros is a setup being paid for by the sinister minister.
The product placement when we met the ex prostitute was hilarious, though it added to my general annoyance at that whole scene/ Marty's skeevy ass.
I think he was down with it when he thought she had a thing for him but got pissed when he realised she was only screwing him to get back at Marty. It kinda made me disappointed in both characters, but w/e flawed characters n all that.Harry Lime wrote:Rust wasn't proud of that at all. "People incapable of guilt usually do have a good time."DeLima wrote:I think the sex scene between Maggie and Rust goes down because Maggie pushes it and Rust is boozing it pretty hard. Not to absolve Rust fully. He does show up at the cop station reddy to take his licks and lets Marty pound him for a bit.Simple Torture wrote:It did seem "pulpy" at times (stole that word from another review I read today, but I felt that way while watching it), with the way it emphasized lust and sex again (although, of course, it's always been in the background since they found Lange's body), but Marty's inevitable fall back into booze and bimbos was a nice acting out of "time is a flat circle." Also, it certainly felt like a "guy's show" in the way that Rust (who's always been a stand-in for us, despite [or maybe because of] his cynicism) finally got to participate in the hump-fest on-screen. But I think there's something deeper going on there, too, which I haven't been able to articulate clearly yet, but it goes something like this: Maggie said pretty bluntly that she thinks Rust has "integrity," and we've been led to believe that all along, for sure, but boning her in the kitchen sure seems like a pretty big crack in his character to me, and one of the biggest we've seen so far (bigger than being an addict or being willing to use violence when he needs to know something); since we've identified with Rust up to this point (at least I have), this was one of the few moments where I threw my hands up (mentally) and said, "Woah, woah, not cool, man!" I'm wondering if this is the first in a line of times we'll back away from Rust in the last couple of episodes, signifying that we've been wrong about him all along. We'll see!turned2black wrote:Not a huge fan of last night's episode. I feel like the show is devolving into typical cop show drama. At one point, my wife looked at me and said, "This is such a guys show now". The moodiness and great cinematography were also absent. Still probably the best show on TV, but no longer the "masterpiece" I thought it could be.
Has anyone read any of Pizzolatto's fiction? i downloaded both his novel and his collection of short stories to see if they're any good, but I probably won't be able to dig into them anytime soon.
The him taking it out on Maggie like he did is where I said, "What's up with that?"
I'm pretty disappointed that they went there at all really, I thought they were gonna have them get together ever since the dinner scene , but by this point I thought we'd dodged the bullet. It just seems so obvious, they were building up Marty and rusts 'break up' and rusts 2002 breakdown or whatever to be something more interesting, I had thought. Though it was pretty funny that rusts reason for quitting was 'screw this shit'.
Too much Marty and his assholery and not enough rust or the actual case imo. I definitely missed 2012 rust and his monologues this episode, I'm thinking this episode will probably feel better in a marathon/ binge watch.
I'm interested to see how they wrap stuff up in only two episodes, hopefully it doesn't feel too rushed. The first 3 episodes with their slow crawl and vaguely dream like quality are still the best for me, I could have watched an entire series of that.
Here's hoping they 'stick the landing' like someone else said.

I'm with you on Woody. He'll deserves nom too. Spacey had very little chance last year with Cranston's almost guaranteed win.Harry Lime wrote:Don't rule out Woody. I loved it. We got a little more of Marty being the real asshole of both. Rust is the fucked up one? or is it Marty all the way? The guy whose family can stand him...interesting.
Im sure something with Marty´s daughter is going to happen.

Re: HBO Television Show: True Detective
People saying this week's episode was the weakest so far demonstrates how great this has been. I thought it was an excellent hour of television.
