I have to disagree with Malice on Tom Cruise. I think he's a talented and charismatic actor, particularly on Michael Mann's "Collateral", even though I'm thoroughly creeped out by him and his cult.

I would agree with this in the sense that he's good when he's playing out of type, but usually you just get Tom Cruise playing Tom Cruise - and that's balls!

It works for some roles. I think it really worked in "Vanilla Sky", where he was playing a happy-go-lucky smarmy billionaire who struggles to feel any sense of authenticity in his life. That's a movie I will defend forever, and not just because of the amazing soundtrack.

i admit to not seeing a whole range of tom cruise movies, but the one's i've seen have really been terrible to me - the MI movies - hated them. minority report - meh, I like speculative /scifi etc, so it was 'ok' but he didn't add anything special to it for me, and the movie plot suffered some too. rain man was ok but both him and hoffman were a constant reminder that it was tom cruise and dustin hoffman in a movie to me. jerry mcguire? ugh. I don't think it was THAT bad, but really, who wants that kind of movie from him?
I'd forgotten about a few good men - that was good. but I've seen it in rerun showing on AMC so many times I really don't care about it anymore.

He was good in Magnolia. Otherwise he's basically playing Tom Cruise in every movie, and seems flat any time he tries something different. That said, range is overrated.

He seems exquisitely good at finding the inner Tom Cruise in every character he portrays, which DOES serve the movie well when the character is right.
